Who is Helena?

Helena Marino is the central protagonist of Alchemised. A gifted vivimancer and former healer of the Order of the Eternal Flame, she is captured after the fall of Paladia and imprisoned as a war criminal. Born outside Paladia and without guild protection, Helena rises through ability rather than lineage and remains valued yet institutionally distrusted.

Throughout the war, she operates at the boundary between sanctioned healing and forbidden alchemy. To protect others, she engages in intelligence work, memory manipulation, and morally compromised decisions. After the war, her erased memories and suppressed resonance render her both a threat and a resource to the Undying.

Helena does not seek power or absolution. She survives by enduring cost, accepting consequence, and choosing utility over safety.

Helena’s Magic and Abilities

Helena Marino is a vivimancer, specializing in life-based alchemy focused on healing and vitality transfer. She can stabilize failing bodies and prevent death when intervention is still possible.

High-level healing carries a cost known as the Toll. To heal mortal wounds, Helena must expend her own vitality, gradually shortening her lifespan and weakening her body and resonance.

She also possesses limited animantic ability used for cognitive regulation and memory suppression. Her animancy is narrow, unstable, and ineffective against deep emotional states. Helena refuses to use vivimancy for torture or coercion and relies on animantic techniques when forced into information extraction, despite the psychological risk.

Helena and Kaine’s Relationship

Helena Marino’s relationship with Kaine Ferron is one of the central emotional threads of Alchemised. They meet during the war while serving opposing systems under conditions of secrecy and shared risk.

After the fall of Paladia, Helena is imprisoned while Kaine rises within the structure that controls her. Love persists, reshaped by guilt, coercion, and the consequences of survival.

Kaine Ferron

Who Is Kaine Ferron?

Kaine Ferron is one of the central protagonists of Alchemised. The heir to the Ferron iron guild and later High Reeve of the Undying, he survives the war through coercion, calculation, and containment from within a necromantic system. Raised in an industrial dynasty, Kaine derives his power from material production and structural control rather than religion or nobility. This makes him immensely useful while keeping him socially inferior within Paladia’s hierarchy.

Kaine Ferron’s Magic and Abilities

Kaine Ferron’s primary alchemical discipline is inorganic alchemy, particularly metallurgy and structural manipulation. His resonance allows him to reinforce, reshape, and weaponize iron with exceptional precision, forming the foundation of Ferron guild power and Paladia’s industrial infrastructure.

In addition, Kaine is a high-level animancer capable of deliberately influencing consciousness, memory, and mental resistance. He uses animancy both defensively and coercively, allowing him to shield his mind from intrusion or impose control when required.

Kaine is further altered through necromantic augmentation imposed by Morrough. Bone fragments implanted into his body bind him to the Undying network, granting enhanced endurance and resistance to injury at the cost of autonomy. These alterations ensure his survival while permanently tethering him to necromantic control.

Kaine Ferron and Helena Marino

Kaine Ferron’s relationship with Helena Marino forms one of the central emotional threads of Alchemised. They meet during the war, when Kaine operates as a covert defector within the Undying and Helena serves as a healer aligned with the Order of the Eternal Flame.

Their bond is rooted in recognition rather than idealism. Neither seeks absolution from the other; both understand the compromises survival demands. After the war, Kaine’s ascent to High Reeve places him in authority over Helena’s imprisonment, forcing him to participate in the system that confines her. Love persists, but it is inseparable from guilt, restraint, and the knowledge that Kaine’s survival has come at her expense.

Luc Holdfast

Who Is Luc Holdfast?

Luc Holdfast is the Principate of the Order of the Eternal Flame in Alchemised, elevated to leadership at sixteen following the murder of his father, Apollo Holdfast. Raised within Paladia’s religious and political institutions, Luc inherits authority long before he has the power or experience to wield it.

Though publicly revered as a symbol of faith and continuity, Luc’s authority is largely ceremonial in his early years. Institutional figures exercise governance in Luc’s name, particularly his great-aunt Ilva Holdfast, leaving him burdened by responsibility while denying him true agency. Throughout the war, he remains a visible and increasingly constrained figurehead, valued more for what he represents than for what he controls.

Luc ultimately becomes a strategic and symbolic target. After his capture, he returns under Morrough’s possession and is weaponized against the Order he once embodied. His actions during this period contribute directly to the collapse of the Eternal Flame. Luc does not survive the consequences, and his death marks the end of the Principate as a stabilizing force within Paladia.

Luc Holdfast’s Magic and Abilities

Luc Holdfast is a trained pyromancer of the Eternal Flame. His use of fire emphasizes control, ritual precision, and symbolic ignition rather than large-scale battlefield destruction, aligning his magic with religious authority rather than raw force.

In addition, Luc possesses latent animantic resonance that affects emotional perception and collective focus. This manifests as a subtle ability to influence atmosphere, attention, and cohesion within a space. For much of his life, this effect is misattributed to charisma or the authority of his office rather than recognized as animancy.

Animancy is heavily stigmatized within Paladia, and Luc neither trains nor consciously employs this ability. Its unacknowledged presence leaves him vulnerable to manipulation, particularly under Morrough’s influence.

Luc Holdfast and Lila Bayard

Luc Holdfast’s relationship with Lila Bayard develops from professional duty into a concealed personal bond. Assigned as his Paladin Primary, Lila serves as Luc’s protector throughout the war, sharing prolonged proximity to both his public role and private vulnerability.

Their relationship remains hidden due to its political consequences. After Luc’s return from captivity, Lila becomes pregnant during the period in which Luc is under Morrough’s possession.

Lila

Who Is Lila Bayard?

Lila Bayard is a legendary paladin of the Order of the Eternal Flame and a once-in-a-generation combat alchemist. Trained from childhood under the Principate’s authority, she becomes Paladin Primary to Luc Holdfast—placed at the center of power, war, and constant scrutiny.

When Luc is captured, the Order makes Lila the scapegoat. She loses her rank, is isolated, and becomes politically inconvenient at the exact moment she is most vulnerable. Lila’s story is the cost of loyalty: what happens to a “perfect weapon” when the system no longer wants to claim her.

Lila Bayard’s Magic and Abilities

Lila is built for frontline combat. Her resonance amplifies force, weaponwork, and survivability—alchemy fused into movement, armor systems, and engineered arrays. Even after losing her leg, she returns with a customized prosthetic integrated into her fighting style, treating her gear as an extension of her body.

Secretly, she also has limited vivimancy—illegal under the Sacred Faith. She uses it only on herself to suppress injuries and conceal her pregnancy, not as power, but as control in a world that offers her none.

Lila Bayard and Luc Holdfast

Lila’s bond with Luc begins as duty, paladin and Principate, but grows into something private and dangerous in a system that demands absolute loyalty. After Luc’s capture and Morrough’s possession, Lila carries the fallout: blame, disgrace, isolation, and a pregnancy that ties her to Luc in the most irreversible way.

Morrough

Who is Morrough?

Morrough, also known as Cetus, is the primary antagonist of Alchemised and the creator of the Undying. An ancient necromancer and alchemical scientist, he achieves functional immortality through necromantic engineering rather than faith or divinity, destabilizing Paladia and overturning its moral and political order.

Paladian records long dismiss Morrough as a myth or collective pseudonym, before revealing him as a single living being whose lifespan predates modern Paladia. Rejecting religion, tradition, and institutional restraint, he operates entirely outside established alchemical law, driven by experimentation, control, and endurance.

Morrough does not rule Paladia directly. Instead, he dismantles it from within—through coercion, augmentation, and systemic dependency—functioning as the architect of its collapse rather than its sovereign.

Morrough’s Magic and Abilities

Morrough is a master of necromancy, animancy, and advanced alchemical science far beyond contemporary understanding. His work is entirely scientific in origin, rejecting ritualized faith in favor of repeatable, engineered process.

His most significant achievement is true immortality. This is achieved through the implantation of bone-based phylacteries—fragments of Morrough’s own body—that bind recipients directly to him. These anchors prevent aging and physical decay while enforcing absolute dependency.

Morrough is capable of large-scale necromantic reanimation, animantic soul transference, and consciousness suppression. Though immensely powerful, his original body continues to deteriorate, forcing him to rely increasingly on harvested organs and the Undying themselves to sustain function.

Morrough and the Undying

Morrough is the creator and absolute master of the Undying. Each Undying is bound to him through embedded phylacteries, forming a necromantic network centered entirely on Morrough’s continued existence.

This bond grants durability and resistance to death but strips autonomy. The Undying cannot function independently for extended periods. Morrough’s death collapses the system and exposes the extent to which it relied on absolute control.

Aurelia Ferron

Who is Aurelia Ferron?

Aurelia Ferron is Kaine Ferron’s wife and the Lady of the Ferron house in Alchemised. Aurelia Ferron is a rare iron transmuter whose family engineers her upbringing and marriage to secure guild power through bloodline, resonance, and control.

She is a rare iron transmuter whose family engineers her upbringing and marriage to secure guild power through bloodline, resonance, and control. Her family arranges her marriage to Kaine in childhood, binding her to the Ferron guild years before she has any agency. Within Paladia’s rigid hierarchy, she represents lineage elevated over consent.

As Lady of the Ferron house, Aurelia occupies a visible but constrained position—valued for what she enables rather than who she is.

Aurelia Ferron’s Magic and Abilities

Aurelia Ferron possesses a rare transmutational affinity with iron. Unlike conventional metallurgists, she can manipulate iron structures directly, reshaping and repurposing them through resonance alone.

Because the Ferron house is constructed entirely of pure iron, Aurelia can exert intimate control over its physical environment. She can alter walls, corridors, and structural elements for defensive or restrictive purposes, turning the household itself into an instrument of control.

Her alchemical rings and short staff indicate formal training. Aurelia’s magic is not oriented toward battle or innovation, but toward permanence—static, enclosed, and deeply bound to place.

Aurelia Ferron and Kaine Ferron

Aurelia Ferron’s relationship with Kaine Ferron rests on arrangement rather than intimacy. Their families plan the marriage as a long-term strategy to consolidate iron resonance within the Ferron line.

The union is transactional, built on expectation and utility rather than mutual recognition. As Kaine’s loyalties fracture and the Ferron household destabilizes, Aurelia’s position erodes alongside the structures meant to secure her.

Aurelia’s death during the collapse of the Ferron house underscores the fragility of her role. Despite proximity to power, she remains expendable—destroyed not by rebellion, but by the system she was raised to uphold.

Soren Bayard

Who is Soren Bayard?

Soren Bayard is a paladin of the Order of the Eternal Flame and the twin brother of Lila Bayard in Alchemised. Trained as a double-track combat alchemist, he is widely regarded as a skilled fighter and a dependable battlefield presence.

From childhood, Soren’s life runs alongside Lila’s. Though disciplined and capable in his own right, the Order defines his position through proximity to his sister—her reputation, her assignments, and the protection she commands. Where Lila is singular and exceptional, Soren is consistent, loyal, and reliable.

He serves throughout the war as a frontline paladin within the Eternal Flame’s command structure until his death during a failed rescue mission.

Soren Bayard’s Magic and Abilities

The Order of the Eternal Flame trains Soren Bayard in combat alchemy on a double track that combines theoretical mastery with sustained battlefield application.

His resonance favors direct engagement, weapon amplification, and survivability under extreme conditions. By institutional standards, the Order considers Soren an exceptional combat alchemist—precise, disciplined, and effective under pressure.

The Order consistently measures his abilities against those of his twin sister. This comparison does not diminish his competence, but it shapes how the institution perceives him.

Soren Bayard and Lila Bayard

Soren Bayard’s relationship with Lila Bayard is defined by protection rather than rivalry. He consistently prioritizes her safety over recognition, advancement, or personal distinction.

During the war, Soren accepts obscurity without resentment, choosing loyalty over ambition. His final decision—to instruct Helena Marino to reanimate him if killed necromantically—marks a deliberate violation of the Order’s doctrine, underscoring the extent to which his allegiance to Lila outweighs his allegiance to faith, law, or self-preservation.

Jan Crowther

Who is Jan Crowther?

Jan Crowther is a red-flame pyromancer of the Order of the Eternal Flame and a member of its governing Council in Alchemised. Orphaned by necromancy as a child, he rises through institutional sponsorship rather than lineage, eventually occupying a position of authority during the war.

Crowther’s power is administrative rather than martial. He operates through oversight, negotiation, and enforcement, managing alliances and individuals the Order deems too volatile to leave unregulated. His presence reflects the Eternal Flame’s attempt to impose legitimacy and structure on morally compromised actions.

He does not survive the war’s aftermath. After the fall of Paladia, Atreus Ferron inhabits Crowther’s body as a lich.

Jan Crowther’s Magic and Abilities

Jan Crowther is a red-flame pyromancer of the Order of the Eternal Flame. He uses pyromancy in a controlled, functional manner, applying it to sanctioned, ceremonial, and disciplinary purposes rather than large-scale battlefield combat.

Earlier in his career, Crowther participated in crusades against necromancy, during which he sustains a permanent injury that leaves his right arm paralysed. Following this, his duties shift away from combat and toward governance, supervision, and internal enforcement.

Despite his physical limitation, he continues to wear ignition rings on his remaining hand, signaling retained authority and formal recognition within the Order.

Jan Crowther and the Order of the Eternal Flame

During the war, Jan Crowther functions as an intermediary between ideology and action. He negotiates directly with Kaine Ferron on behalf of the Eternal Flame, operating under Council authority during periods of acute instability.

After these negotiations, the Order assigns Crowther as Helena Marino’s official handler in matters concerning Kaine Ferron. He supervises their contact, monitoring and sanctioning every interaction rather than offering protection.

Crowther also takes part in the interrogation and torture of prisoners within the Order’s internal enforcement system. He carries out these actions as sanctioned procedure, treating them as institutional duty rather than personal choice.

Shiseo

Who is Shiseo?

Shiseo is a metallurgist from the Eastern Empire who seeks political asylum in Paladia in Alchemised. A foreign alchemist without guild protection, he enters Paladian institutions through political intervention rather than formal allegiance.

His significance lies in technical contribution rather than rank or authority. Working primarily as Helena Marino’s laboratory assistant, Shiseo introduces unfamiliar metallurgical principles that challenge Paladian assumptions about resonance and material limitation.

Shiseo’s Magic and Abilities

Shiseo is a metallurgist with a strong aptitude in chymiatria and experimental alloy development. He adapts quickly to Paladian laboratory techniques and demonstrates particular skill in applied metallurgy related to healing and bodily modification.

During winter research, Shiseo identifies the final unknown component of an experimental alloy previously injected into Vanya Gettlich. Working alongside Helena Marino, he determines that the material involves a synthetic fusion incorporating a rare Eastern metal known as mo’lian’shi.

This discovery leads directly to the identification of nullium, a substance capable of suppressing alchemical resonance. Shiseo later assists in developing practical nullium applications, including wearable suppression devices designed to limit or neutralize resonance in living subjects.

Shiseo and Helena Marino

Shiseo works as Helena Marino’s unofficial laboratory assistant and later as a close collaborator. Their relationship remains primarily professional, marked by restraint, precision, and shared focus rather than personal familiarity.

Through their joint work on nullium, Shiseo becomes increasingly forthcoming, eventually disclosing his origins and political circumstances to Helena. His trust develops slowly and is rooted in shared risk rather than emotional closeness.

Together, their research fundamentally alters the balance of power within the conflict, introducing a method of control that does not rely on necromancy or religious sanction.

Ilva Holdfast

Who is Ilva Holdfast?

Ilva Holdfast is a senior political figure within the Order of the Eternal Flame and the great-aunt of Luc Holdfast in Alchemised. A non-alchemist born into one of Paladia’s most powerful families, her authority derives from governance, experience, and institutional continuity rather than resonance.

As a Lapse, Ilva represents a rare exception within Paladia’s power structure. Her influence is administrative rather than symbolic, rooted in decades of service to the Holdfast line and the mechanisms of rule rather than religious authority or alchemical power.

During the war, she serves as Luc Holdfast’s steward and actively maintains political stability while he is deployed and increasingly constrained. She does not survive the collapse of the Order.

Ilva Holdfast and Luc Holdfast

Ilva Holdfast is Luc Holdfast’s closest surviving relative and primary guardian following the deaths of other members of the Holdfast family.

She acts as Luc’s advisor and proxy, managing affairs of state and absorbing political consequences on his behalf. As Luc comes under Morrough’s possession, Ilva’s ability to protect him steadily erodes.

Morrough’s possession drives Luc to kill Ilva, exposing the complete collapse of institutional governance under necromantic domination.

Stroud

Who is Irmgard Stroud?

Irmgard Stroud is a vivimancer and medical doctor active in Paladia after the war in Alchemised. Operating within the Undying’s post-war administrative structures, she holds authority over medical recovery, alchemical research, and population control initiatives.

Her work is institutional rather than restorative. Stroud approaches medicine as governance—focused on regulation, output, and long-term control rather than individual survival. She does not survive the post-war period.

Irmgard Stroud’s Magic and Abilities

Irmgard Stroud is a vivimancer whose practice centers on medical intervention, reproductive manipulation, and experimental research. Unlike traditional healers, she treats vivimancy as a biological mechanism rather than a personal exchange of vitality.

Her approach removes cost from the practitioner and transfers consequence entirely onto the subject. This allows for repeated intervention, forced experimentation, and population-scale manipulation without personal degradation. Stroud’s vivimancy is precise, repeatable, and institutionally optimized—aligned with systems of control rather than care.

Irmgard Stroud and Helena Marino

Irmgard Stroud oversees Helena Marino’s recovery following containment, marking their first direct interaction. The encounter is immediately adversarial, intensified by the revelation that both women are vivimancers who fought on opposing sides of the war.

Ivy Purnell

Who is Ivy Purnell?

Ivy Purnell is a young vivimancer whose abilities manifest unusually early during the war in Alchemised. Barely into adolescence, the Order of the Eternal Flame takes Ivy into custody and uses her as a vivimantic asset in institutional interrogations.

Ivy holds no rank, authority, or agency. The Order defines her value entirely by the utility of her resonance, reflecting its moral collapse as survival replaces restraint. She does not survive the aftermath of the war.

Ivy Purnell’s Magic and Abilities

Ivy Purnell is a vivimancer whose resonance manifests far earlier than is considered normal. Vivimancy typically emerges later in life; Ivy’s early development appears anomalous and likely accelerates under prolonged exposure to wartime conditions.

Despite her age, the Order deploys her abilities in interrogation and torture. It never formally assesses the full scope or limits of her vivimancy, treating her as a functional resource rather than a practitioner in training.

The Order uses Ivy’s resonance without regard for physical toll or psychological harm, demonstrating how institutional necessity overrides ethical responsibility.

Ivy Purnell and Helena Marino

Ivy Purnell works alongside Helena Marino during the later stages of the war under the authority of the Order of the Eternal Flame. Unlike Helena, Ivy possesses no status or protection and is fully subject to institutional control.

In the final sequence of events, Ivy assists in securing Morrough’s arm, a decisive act that destabilizes necromantic control and enables Kaine Ferron’s liberation. Despite its significance, Ivy receives no recognition or protection, reinforcing her position as expendable within the system that exploited her.

Atreus Ferron

Who is Atreus Ferron?

Atreus Ferron is the Iron Guildmaster of Paladia and the patriarch of House Ferron in Alchemised. One of New Paladia’s most powerful industrial figures, he derives authority from iron production and guild control rather than religion, placing him in open opposition to the Holdfast-led Order of the Eternal Flame.

He is arrested and executed for publicly resisting religious governance. After death, Atreus returns as a lich, inhabiting the body of Jan Crowther. His reappearance becomes a critical rupture in Morrough’s system of control and directly influences the fate of his son, Kaine Ferron.

Atreus Ferron’s Magic and Abilities

In life, Atreus Ferron possesses extensive knowledge of metallurgy and iron-based alchemy, consistent with his role as Iron Guildmaster. His power is practical and structural, tied to industry, production, and material control rather than overt combat application.

After death, Atreus exists as a lich through necromancy. He is capable of inhabiting another body, sustaining consciousness beyond execution at the cost of physical degradation and permanence. His posthumous state is unstable and limited, but sufficient to act once with decisive impact.

Atreus Ferron and Kaine Ferron

Atreus Ferron’s relationship with Kaine Ferron is defined by fear, control, and legacy. He is deeply protective of his family line, driven by anxiety that Kaine’s existence—and any sign of vivimancy—will invite intervention from the Eternal Flame.

During Kaine’s childhood, Atreus exerts strict oversight over his education and associations, assigning Jan Crowther as both advisor and observer. His control is motivated less by cruelty than by desperation to preserve his son and House Ferron.

After death, Atreus consents to Helena Marino’s attempt to save Kaine, stating that Kaine’s mother would have wanted their son to live. In this final act, Atreus relinquishes control in favor of survival, allowing Kaine a future unbound from the legacy that consumed him.

Sebastian Bayard

Who is Sebastian Bayard?

Sebastian Bayard is a former paladin of the Order of the Eternal Flame and the Paladin Primary to Principate Apollo Holdfast in Alchemised. He is the uncle of Lila and Soren Bayard and served during an earlier period of relative political stability within Paladia.

During the war, Sebastian is part of the paladin team operating alongside Luc Holdfast, Lila Bayard, and Soren Bayard. He takes part in the mission to rescue Luc and does not condemn Helena Marino when she turns Soren into a necrothrall after his death.

Sebastian is present with Helena Marino when they discover that Morrough has possessed Luc Holdfast.

Falcon Matthias

Who is Falcon Matias?

Falcon Matias is a senior religious official of the Order of the Eternal Flame in Alchemised. He serves as the spiritual counsellor to the Eternal Flame’s Council and is Helena Marino’s direct superior within the Order’s hierarchy.

His authority is institutional and doctrinal rather than alchemical. Falcon operates within the religious framework of the Eternal Flame, overseeing spiritual discipline, ideological conformity, and sanctioned practice.

Matron Pace

Who is Matron Pace?

Matron Pace is a veteran medical worker at Paladian Central Hospital in Alchemised. She works within Paladia’s post-war medical infrastructure and draws her authority from long-term service rather than formal rank.

Unlike many institutional figures Helena encounters after containment, Matron Pace is consistently warm toward her. She acts as a quiet aid during Helena’s recovery, offering practical help and human kindness within an otherwise hostile system.

Mandel

Who is Mandl?

Mandl is a former prison overseer who held authority over detainees during and immediately after the war in Alchemised. Records indicate that she confined Helena Marino in a stasis tank and left her conscious. She intended the confinement to inflict prolonged psychological torment before death.

Mandl withheld documentation of Helena’s imprisonment, assuming Helena would die before the omission was discovered. The Order reassigned Mandl, selected her for ascendance, and transferred her to the Outpost. Helena remained abandoned in storage without records for fourteen months.

After the war, Mandl’s actions are uncovered during an inquiry led by Irmgard Stroud. When confronted, Mandl admits to her misconduct and attempts to justify it as loyalty to the cause. Morrough judges her unworthy of ascendance and executes her publicly, terminating both her testimony and her life.

Earlier in the war, the Order of the Eternal Flame captured Mandl under Jan Crowther’s authority, with Helena Marino participating in the interrogation.

Erik Lancaster

Who is Erik Lancaster?

Erik Lancaster is an aspirant alchemist aligned with Morrough in Alchemised. During the war, the Order of the Eternal Flame captures and tortures him under Jan Crowther’s authority, with Helena Marino involved in his interrogation.

After the war, Erik survives and seeks revenge on Helena Marino, attempting to kidnap her. He conducts an affair with Aurelia Ferron in order to gain proximity to Helena.

Earlier in the war, Mandl had been captured by Jan Crowther, during which Helena Marino participated in her interrogation.

Elain Boyle

Who is Elain Boyle?

Elain Boyle is a vivimancer and healer of the Order of the Eternal Flame in Alchemised, rising from trainee status during the war to become Luc Holdfast’s personal healer. Known for her social ease and natural likeability, Elain quickly becomes widely preferred among patients and peers alike, often distinguished more for approachability than technical rigor. During the later stages of the war, she is formally appointed the Resistance’s lead healer—a position created specifically for her—while continuing to work exclusively under Luc’s authority.

After the war, Elain is killed during Morrough’s seizure of the Institute. Records suggest her body was sent to the mines, and no confirmed remains have been recovered.
