Starside
Helmhawks are winged magical creatures found in Starside that once also lived in Stormside. By the time of the Questral, they are no longer commonly found there, making the species closely connected to something Stormside has lost.
During the Questral, Zane Sterling forms a connection with a helmhawk. Zane comes from Helmspeak in Stormside and enters Starside hoping to obtain magic that can help his homeland. His encounter with the creature therefore carries particular significance because helmhawks once lived on the mortal side as well.
The helmhawk later accompanies Zane during his journey through Starside. By the end of the Questral, Zane has not only secured a goblet of magic but also returns with the winged creature, bringing a species once known in Stormside back with him.

Helmhawks are large winged creatures. Their ability to carry a rider makes them an important means of travel through Starside.
Abilities
Helmhawks can fly and are capable of carrying riders across Starside. Zane’s connection with one also shows that they can form a close partnership with mortals.
Connection to Zane Sterling
The best-known helmhawk is connected to Zane Sterling, heir of House Sterling and one of the mortal challengers in the Questral. Zane enters Starside seeking magic for Helmspeak and later forms a connection with the creature during his journey.
The helmhawk has particular meaning for Zane because its species once lived in Stormside. When Zane returns with the creature, he brings back not only a companion from Starside but also something connected to the history of the mortal lands.
