Biography

Starside

The God of Travels is a female god in Starside and the goddess who burned Aris Agron’s village in Silverside, killing her family and destroying her home. Aris survives the fire as a child and sees the goddess through the flames before she disappears. The attack becomes the defining event of Aris’s life and the reason she later enters the Questral seeking revenge.

The God of Travels is associated with journeys, gates, and the spaces in between them. She is also described as the god of the Questral itself. The gates leading to the Land of the Gods are protected by unbreakable magic and normally cannot be opened outside the fifty days of the Questral, except potentially by the god who created them.

She also controls travel and access to information across Starside. The God of Travels has most maps destroyed, outlaws maps, and stations Masks along major trails. This makes travel more difficult and leaves many immortals dependent on the gods despite the resources available throughout Starside.

Years after the destruction of Silverside, Aris reaches the Land of the Gods at the end of the Questral. After researching how to summon gods in Vander Evren’s library, she uses her blood and sword to call the God of Travels to her.

During their confrontation, the goddess confirms that she remembers Aris as the child who did not burn. Aris accuses her of burning her village to the ground and killing her family. The God of Travels shows no remorse and explains that she targeted Aris because of a prophecy, believing Aris posed a threat that needed to be eliminated.

The goddess later offers Aris a bargain. If Aris swears on her blood not to kill her, she will reveal how Aris can bring back her family. Aris accepts the oath and learns that she must kill the God of Death.

The oath prevents Aris from killing the God of Travels herself, but it does not save the goddess. Aris’s silver dragon later attacks and eats her, killing the God of Travels.

Physical Description

The God of Travels has pale skin and silver hair and possesses an ethereal, otherworldly beauty. Aris describes her skin as gleaming like her own silver sword.

Hundreds of gemstones grow from and decorate her skin in many different colors, including emeralds, rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. The jewels continue to shine even during her confrontation with Aris.

When Aris remembers the goddess from the night her family dies, she recalls her having silver-red, sparkling eyes. Her distinctive appearance allows Aris to recognize her years later in the Land of the Gods.

Abilities and Powers

As the God of Travels, she is connected to journeys, gates, in-betweens, and the Questral itself. Her association with the Questral extends to the magical gates that control access to the Land of the Gods.

The gates are protected by unbreakable magic and remain closed outside the fifty days of the Questral. Even the gods cannot normally open them during that period, although Aris believes the God of Travels may be able to because she created them.

The goddess also exercises control over travel within Starside by destroying and outlawing maps and placing Masks along major trails. These restrictions make it harder for inhabitants to move freely through the land.

She possesses enough destructive power to burn Aris’s village to the ground. The fire kills Aris’s family and hundreds of other people, while Aris survives because of her immunity to heat.

The God of Travels also possesses knowledge of the prophecy surrounding Aris and knows a way for Aris to potentially bring back her family. Despite her divine power, she is not invulnerable and is ultimately killed by Aris’s dragon.

Connection to Aris Agron

The God of Travels shapes Aris Agron’s life long before the Questral begins. When Aris is a child, the goddess burns her village and home in Silverside. Aris’s family becomes trapped inside their burning house, and her parents and sister die in the fire while Aris survives.

Aris sees the silver-haired, silver-red-eyed goddess through the flames and spends the following years determined to find her again. Revenge becomes one of Aris’s primary reasons for entering Starside and completing the Questral.

When Aris finally confronts her in the Land of the Gods, she learns that the attack was deliberate. The God of Travels believed a prophecy identified Aris as a future threat and tried to eliminate her before that threat could develop.

Their confrontation changes Aris’s goal when the goddess reveals that there may be a way to bring her family back. Aris swears a blood oath not to kill her in exchange for the information and learns that killing the God of Death could restore her family.

Although Aris cannot kill the goddess herself after making the oath, her dragon eventually does so by eating the God of Travels.
