Biography
Zane Sterling is the heir to House Sterling, one of Stormside’s Great Houses, and comes from Helmspeak in the Bladelands. His family controls the surrounding mountain and its silver mines, which supply metal to the king’s guard and blacksmiths across Stormside.
Despite his privileged position, Zane leaves Helmspeak in secret to take part in the Questral. He travels with only his axe and a small amount of provisions rather than the resources available to his house. After surviving the Culling, he becomes one of the fifty challengers allowed through the gates into Starside.
Zane befriends Aris Agron and Kira early in the journey. When Aris is stopped just before reaching the gates, Zane gives up his own safe position to help her through, allowing them both to qualify for the Questral. The three continue traveling together through Starside.
At the Beast Tree, Zane hopes to find the Helmhawks that once lived in the mountains around Helmspeak. His path eventually separates from Aris’s, but he succeeds in bonding with a massive Helmhawk.
Zane later reaches the well of magic and claims a cup of magic. Rather than using it for himself, he plans to return to Stormside and pour the magic over his homeland, hoping to restore the mountain and help the people who live there. He leaves Starside on his Helmhawk with the intention of saving Helmspeak.
Physical Description
Zane Sterling is a tall man with brown skin and dark hair. He has a strong build and usually carries an axe as his weapon. His height and broad frame give him an imposing presence, though his expression is often more relaxed than threatening.
Personality
Zane Sterling is calm, capable, and quietly selfless. He tends to stay composed under pressure and does not draw attention to his status as heir to House Sterling.
He is also deeply loyal and protective. Zane repeatedly puts himself at risk for others, including Aris, and is willing to give up personal advantages if it helps someone else survive. His decision to use the magic he wins to restore Helmspeak also shows that he feels a strong sense of responsibility toward his home and the people who depend on him.
Abilities
Zane Sterling is a skilled fighter and experienced axe wielder. He handles himself well during the Culling and throughout the Questral, using both strength and quick reactions to survive dangerous encounters.
He is also an experienced climber, having grown up in Helmspeak in the Bladelands, and uses that experience at the Beast Tree. Later, he successfully bonds with a Helmhawk, giving him a powerful flying companion for the rest of his journey.
