Biography
Stellan is a blacksmith from Nightfell and one of the few mortals to survive the previous Questral, around fifty years before Starside. He returns to Stormside without a cup of magic and brings back only a piece of rare Starside metal. Many mortals see that choice as a failure, and Stellan becomes an outsider despite his skill as a blacksmith.
During the Questral, Stellan learns about the suffering of the immortals and gives his magic to Vander Everen and his people instead of keeping it for himself. The two become friends, and Vander later credits Stellan with saving his life.
Years later, Stellan finds Aris Agron after her village burns and takes her in. He gives her a home in Nightfell, teaches her to forge weapons, and trains her to fight.
Stellan strongly opposes Aris entering the Questral and tells her very little about Starside. Shortly before the Culling, someone attacks him for the rare dagger he brought back from Starside. Aris finds him mortally wounded, and before he dies, Stellan tells her to find Vander Everen.

Personality
Stellan is reserved, practical, and fiercely protective. He rarely shows emotion and tends to express care through actions rather than words. After taking Aris in, he gives her a home, teaches her to forge weapons, and trains her to fight.
He is also stubborn and cautious, especially when it comes to the Questral. His past experience in Starside makes him deeply wary of the dangers there, and much of his behavior toward Aris is driven by a desire to keep her alive.
Abilities
Stellan is a highly skilled blacksmith and weaponsmith with decades of experience. He forges weapons in Nightfell and teaches Aris both how to make swords and how to use them.
He also has significant combat experience from surviving the previous Questral. Although the book does not present him as a supernatural fighter, his survival in Starside and ability to train Aris suggest that he is an experienced and capable swordsman.
