Biography

Early Life

Xaden Riorson was born in 611 AU as the son of Fen Riorson and Talia Riorson. He grew up in Aretia, the capital of Tyrrendor, at Riorson House. As the son of Fen Riorson, Xaden belonged to one of Tyrrendor’s most powerful noble families and was connected to the political future of the province long before he entered Basgiath War College.

His childhood changed dramatically when his mother left after fulfilling the terms of her marriage contract. Xaden was still young when she disappeared from his life, leaving him with a wound that shaped his later distrust, emotional control, and reluctance to depend on anyone.

Before the Tyrrish Rebellion, Fen Riorson arranged Xaden’s betrothal to Catriona Cordella as part of a political alliance with Poromiel. The arrangement was not based on love, but on strategy, power, and the rebellion’s need for outside support. This becomes important later when Violet meets Cat in Iron Flame.

After the Tyrrish Rebellion failed, Navarre forced Xaden and the other children of the rebellion to witness the executions of their parents and leaders. During the executions, dragonfire activated the rune-stone Xaden held, marking him with a rebellion relic. The relic later helps shield him from General Melgren’s signet when enough marked ones gather together.

As the oldest of the 107 marked children, Xaden took responsibility for all of them. He made a brutal deal with General Lilith Sorrengail: the marked children would be allowed to enter the Riders Quadrant and fight for survival instead of being executed, while Xaden accepted responsibility for their loyalty. The 107 scars across his back are a physical reminder of that bargain.

After the rebellion, Xaden was sent to Tirvainne to be fostered by Duke Lindell. Liam Mairi was fostered there as well, and the two became as close as brothers. Xaden trained Liam to fight, preparing both of them for the deadly reality of Basgiath. This bond explains why Liam’s death later devastates Xaden so deeply.

When Xaden entered the Riders Quadrant, he did not simply try to survive. He began protecting the marked ones, rebuilding connections to Aretia, and secretly preparing for the war Navarre was hiding. During Threshing, he bonded Sgaeyl, a powerful navy Daggertail dragon. Through her, Xaden became a shadow wielder and one of the most dangerous riders of his generation.

Fourth Wing

In Fourth Wing, Xaden is introduced as the Wingleader of Fourth Wing at Basgiath War College. Violet Sorrengail first sees him on Conscription Day before crossing the Parapet. To Violet, he is terrifying, beautiful, and dangerous — the son of the man her mother helped destroy.

At first, Xaden appears to be a direct threat to Violet. Mira warns Violet to stay away from him, and Violet believes Xaden has every reason to hate her because of Lilith Sorrengail’s role in the Tyrrish Rebellion. But Xaden’s actions are more complicated than simple revenge. He watches Violet closely, challenges her, and forces her to become stronger rather than allowing her to rely only on poison and intelligence.

Xaden repeatedly helps Violet survive Basgiath, even when he hides his motives. He advises her before the Gauntlet, spars with her to teach her how to use her size as an advantage, and later finds a way to help her during Threshing without technically breaking the Codex. When Violet bonds Tairn and Andarna, her life becomes tied to Xaden’s through Tairn and Sgaeyl’s mating bond.

As Violet’s connection to him deepens, Xaden becomes both her greatest temptation and one of her strongest protectors. He makes her a custom saddle for Tairn, gives her daggers, teaches her to shield, and gradually lets her see parts of himself that almost no one else knows. Their relationship is built on attraction, danger, trust, secrets, and a shared refusal to surrender.

During the final War Games, Xaden chooses Violet for his group of marked riders. When they are sent to Athebyne and discover the outpost abandoned, he reveals the truth Navarre has hidden: venin and wyvern are real. Xaden and the others choose to defend Resson instead of abandoning civilians. The battle costs them Liam and Soleil, and Violet is poisoned. Xaden takes her to Aretia, where Violet discovers that her brother Brennan is alive.

Iron Flame

In Iron Flame, Xaden returns to Basgiath after the Battle of Resson with Violet and the surviving marked riders. Their survival threatens Navarre’s official version of events, and Colonel Aetos tries to frame them as liars. Xaden graduates and is assigned to Samara, forcing him and Violet into a long-distance relationship complicated by war, secrets, and their dragons’ bond.

Throughout the book, Xaden remains one of the leaders of the Revolution. He helps rebuild Aretia, works with the Assembly, negotiates alliances, protects weapon-smuggling routes, and prepares for the growing venin threat. His responsibilities are no longer limited to Basgiath — he is now tied to the survival of Tyrrendor, the marked ones, the fliers, and everyone depending on the wards.

His relationship with Violet becomes more intense but also more strained. Violet demands honesty after learning how much he kept from her, while Xaden struggles to reveal truths that could get him killed. His second signet — reading intentions — is one of the most dangerous secrets he carries. If Navarre discovered he was an inntinnsic, he would likely be executed.

When Violet is taken and tortured by Varrish, Xaden abandons caution to save her. He drops wyvern carcasses along Navarre’s border to pull leadership away from Basgiath, then returns for Violet with deadly force. The rescue exposes the truth to many riders and scribes, causing a major shift as parts of Basgiath defect to Aretia.

At the Battle of Basgiath, Xaden faces one of his most important moral breaking points. As the wards fail and Violet risks burning herself out, Xaden draws power from the earth to survive and protect her. This forbidden act turns him venin. By the end of Iron Flame, Xaden is alive, but changed in a way that threatens everything he has fought to protect.

Onyx Storm

In Onyx Storm, Xaden’s story centers on control, shame, love, and the danger of becoming venin. After drawing power from the earth, he is watched constantly by Violet, Garrick, Bodhi, and Imogen. Sgaeyl’s refusal to speak to him cuts deeply, leaving him isolated from one of the most important bonds in his life.

Xaden gains the title Duke of Tyrrendor after the Second Aretia Accord, making his political role even more significant. He is no longer only a rider, rebel, or former wingleader. He becomes a leader with formal power, public responsibility, and enemies who understand how dangerous he is.

His relationship with Violet remains central. The two are deeply in love, but Xaden’s venin state changes the stakes of their intimacy and trust. He fears losing control around her, while Violet refuses to treat him as a lost cause. Their bond becomes both emotional and dangerous: Violet is his anchor, but also the person he is most afraid of hurting.

As the search for answers expands beyond Navarre, Xaden joins Violet and the quest squad across the isles. He faces his mother, political negotiations, threats to Aretia, and the worsening reality of the venin war. By the end of Onyx Storm, his disappearance and Violet’s altered memories create one of the series’ biggest unresolved cliffhangers.

Physical Description

Xaden Riorson is tall, broad, and powerfully built, with the kind of presence that immediately draws attention. Violet describes him as more than four inches over six feet tall, with a massive chest, wide shoulders, heavily muscled arms, and the lethal grace of a rider who knows exactly how dangerous he is.

He has black hair, dark eyebrows, tawny-brown skin, and dark stubble along his jaw. His facial features are sharp and striking, with high cheekbones, long lashes, a strong jawline, and a mouth Violet repeatedly notices. His beauty is never described as soft. It is severe, controlled, and almost weapon-like.

Xaden’s eyes are one of his most distinctive features. They are usually described as onyx with flecks of gold. After he turns venin, the gold shifts toward amber, visually marking the change in him and adding another layer of danger to his appearance.

He bears several important marks. A diagonal scar cuts through his left eyebrow and reaches the upper corner of his cheek, a mark from Sgaeyl during Threshing. His rebellion relic begins at his left wrist and winds upward, reaching his neck and stopping near his jawline. Across his back, he carries Sgaeyl’s dragon relic as well as 107 scars from the bargain he made to protect the marked children.

Xaden usually wears rider leathers, combat gear, or formal clothing suited to his rank. Whether dressed for Basgiath, battle, or political negotiation, his appearance reinforces the same impression: controlled, intimidating, and difficult to read.

Personality

Xaden is controlled, secretive, strategic, and fiercely protective. He rarely reveals more than he has to, and he keeps most of his emotions locked down behind discipline and command. This makes him difficult to read, even for people who know him well. To strangers, he often appears cold, arrogant, or dangerous. To the people he protects, he is the person most willing to carry the impossible burden alone.

His secrecy is not just a personality trait; it is a survival mechanism. Xaden has lived most of his life under threat: as Fen Riorson’s son, as one of the marked ones, as the leader responsible for 107 children, as a rebel hiding the truth about venin, and later as an inntinnsic and venin. Keeping secrets is how he survives, but it also damages his relationships, especially with Violet.

Xaden is deeply loyal, but his loyalty is selective. He does not give trust easily. Garrick, Bodhi, Liam, the marked ones, Sgaeyl, and eventually Violet are among the few people who truly matter to him. Once Xaden claims someone as his responsibility, he will go to extreme lengths to protect them, even when those choices cost him personally.

He is also a natural leader. Xaden does not need to raise his voice to command a room. His authority comes from competence, restraint, and the fact that people believe he will do what must be done. He can be ruthless, but he is not careless. He thinks several moves ahead, weighs risk quickly, and often chooses the option that protects the most people, even if it makes him look cruel.

With Violet, Xaden’s control begins to fracture. She challenges him, sees through him, and refuses to accept only the version of himself he offers the world. Around her, he becomes more vulnerable, more honest, and more visibly afraid. His love for Violet is intense, but it is also tied to his deepest fear: that protecting her may require becoming something she cannot forgive.

Xaden’s greatest weakness is also one of his strongest traits: responsibility. He takes blame onto himself even when the burden is too large for one person to carry. Liam’s death, the survival of the marked ones, the future of Tyrrendor, the safety of Violet, and the war against venin all become weights he believes are his to bear. That sense of duty makes him powerful, but it also pushes him toward self-destruction.

After turning venin, Xaden becomes even more guarded. He fears his own hunger for power and the possibility of losing control. Yet he does not stop fighting. His arc is not about becoming suddenly monstrous; it is about a man who has always carried darkness being forced to confront what happens when that darkness becomes literal.

Powers

Lesser Magic

As a bonded rider, Xaden can channel lesser magic through Sgaeyl. Like other riders, this allows him to unlock doors without touch, move with preternatural speed, manipulate mage lights, power ink pens, and place runes.

Shadow Wielding

Xaden’s primary signet is shadow wielding. He can summon, control, and weaponize shadows, using them to conceal movement, disorient enemies, restrain opponents, and dominate combat situations. His shadows make him one of the most feared riders in Basgiath.

Shadow wielding suits Xaden’s personality. It is subtle, dangerous, and difficult to counter. He often uses it with precision rather than spectacle, which makes the power feel like an extension of his control and strategy.

Inntinnsic Ability

Xaden’s second signet allows him to read intentions. This makes him a form of inntinnsic, though not in the same way as someone who reads full thoughts. He can sense what someone intends to do, giving him a major advantage in combat, negotiation, and survival.

This ability is extremely dangerous to reveal. In Navarre, inntinnsics are usually considered too dangerous to live. Xaden keeps this signet hidden because discovery could mean execution, even for someone as powerful and valuable as him.

Venin Power

After the Battle of Basgiath, Xaden becomes venin after drawing power from the earth. This gives him access to forbidden power, but it also creates a dangerous struggle for control. In Onyx Storm, this becomes one of the central conflicts of his character.

Abilities

Combat Skill

Xaden is one of the strongest fighters in the Riders Quadrant. He is highly skilled in hand-to-hand combat, weapons, flight, and battlefield command. He trains others, including Violet, and can quickly identify weaknesses in an opponent’s stance, habits, and strategy.

Weapons and Runes

Xaden is skilled with daggers and other weapons, but his most important contribution is often strategic rather than purely physical. He understands alloy weapons, runes, wards, and the practical tools needed to fight venin. He also gives Violet custom daggers and helps equip her for the threats she faces.

Leadership

Xaden is a natural commander. As Wingleader, lieutenant, rebel leader, and Duke of Tyrrendor, he repeatedly takes responsibility for others. His leadership style is controlled, demanding, and protective. He does not seek popularity, but people follow him because he is capable, decisive, and willing to sacrifice for the cause.

Strategy and Political Awareness

Xaden understands power on multiple levels: military, political, magical, and personal. He knows how Navarre hides information, how Tyrrendor was punished, how Poromiel fits into the larger war, and how alliances must be built if anyone is going to survive the venin threat.

Relationships

Violet SorrengailViolet is Xaden’s central romantic relationship and eventual wife. Their relationship begins with suspicion, danger, and attraction, but develops into a powerful partnership shaped by trust, secrets, war, and the bond between their dragons. Xaden repeatedly protects Violet, challenges her, and helps her become stronger, while Violet becomes one of the only people who truly sees him beyond his control and reputation.
SgaeylSgaeyl is Xaden’s bonded dragon and one of the most important relationships in his life. Their bond gives him power, status, and connection, but it is also deeply personal. After Xaden turns venin, Sgaeyl’s refusal to speak to him becomes one of the clearest signs of how badly his choice has damaged him.
Liam MairiLiam is Xaden’s foster brother and one of the people he trusts most. They were fostered together in Tirvainne after the rebellion, and Xaden taught Liam how to fight. Liam’s death at Resson leaves Xaden with intense guilt because he had asked Liam to protect Violet.
Garrick TavisGarrick is Xaden’s best friend and one of his closest allies. Their bond predates much of the series and is built on loyalty, rebellion, and shared responsibility. Garrick is one of the few people allowed close enough to understand Xaden’s burdens.
Bodhi DurranBodhi is Xaden’s cousin and a trusted member of his inner circle. He helps support the marked ones, the Revolution, and later the effort to monitor Xaden after he turns venin. Their relationship is built on family loyalty and shared political stakes.
Catriona CordellaCatriona Cordella is Xaden’s former betrothed. Their engagement was political rather than romantic, arranged to support Fen Riorson’s alliance with Poromiel. Cat’s presence in Iron Flame forces Violet to confront Xaden’s past, but Xaden makes clear that he never loved Cat the way he loves Violet.
Dain AetosXaden and Dain have a tense and hostile relationship. Xaden sees Dain as too loyal to rules and Navarre’s system, while Dain distrusts Xaden because of his rebellion ties and his relationship with Violet. Their conflict becomes especially important after Dain’s memories lead to Xaden being sent to Athebyne.
Fen RiorsonFen Riorson is Xaden’s father and the leader associated with the Tyrrish Rebellion. Fen’s execution defines much of Xaden’s life afterward. Xaden inherits not only Fen’s legacy, but also the political consequences of his rebellion and the responsibility of protecting the children left behind.

Dragon

Sgaeyl

Xaden is bonded to Sgaeyl, a navy Daggertail dragon. Sgaeyl is powerful, dangerous, and deeply connected to Tairn, Violet’s black dragon. Because Sgaeyl and Tairn are mates, Xaden and Violet’s lives become tied together after Violet bonds Tairn.

Through Sgaeyl, Xaden channels lesser magic and manifests his shadow-wielding signet. Their bond is one of the foundations of his power, but it is also emotionally significant. Sgaeyl is not simply a source of magic; she is one of the few beings who truly knows Xaden.

After Xaden turns venin, Sgaeyl’s silence becomes devastating. Her refusal to communicate with him shows how serious his transformation is and how deeply the venin influence threatens the rider-dragon bond.
