Biography

Early Life

Liam Mairi was born in 613 AU, the son of Isaac Mairi and Colonel Mairi and the older brother of Sloane Mairi. His family was tied to the Tyrrish Rebellion, and both of his parents were executed after the rebellion failed.

Like the other children of the rebellion’s leaders, Liam was forced to bear the consequences of a war he did not start. His mother gave him a protection rune before the executions, and the dragonfire used against the rebels activated the rune, leaving Liam with a rebellion relic that marked him as one of the 107 children of the rebellion.

Liam’s trauma did not end with the public executions. His father, Isaac Mairi, was executed later at their family home, and Liam witnessed that death as well. Afterward, the Mairi siblings were separated. Liam was sent to Tirvainne to be fostered by Duke Lindell, while Sloane was sent elsewhere.

In Tirvainne, Liam was fostered alongside Xaden Riorson. Their bond became brotherly, shaped by shared grief, survival, and preparation for Basgiath. Xaden taught Liam how to fight so he would have a better chance of surviving the Riders Quadrant. That history explains Liam’s deep loyalty to Xaden and why he trusts him even when others do not.

Fourth Wing

In Fourth Wing, Liam enters the Riders Quadrant in the same year as Violet Sorrengail. He is initially assigned to Second Squad, Tail Section, Fourth Wing, and quickly stands out as one of the strongest cadets in their year.

Liam is fast, skilled, and physically powerful. He completes the Gauntlet faster than anyone else in his year, earns the Gauntlet patch, and performs extremely well during assessment challenges. During Threshing, he bonds Deigh, a red Daggertail dragon.

After the attack on Violet by unbonded cadets, Xaden assigns Liam to watch over her. Liam becomes Violet’s “shadow,” following her through Archives duty, Battle Brief, training, and squad events. At first, Violet understands that his loyalty is mainly to Xaden. But over time, Liam becomes her friend in his own right.

Liam’s friendship with Violet grows through small, human moments: teasing her about Xaden, flirting with Jesinia, carving wooden dragons, guarding her even when she finds it annoying, and staying beside her when danger gets close. He is protective, but unlike Dain, Liam does not treat Violet as helpless. He worries about her, but he also respects her strength.

During the War Games, Liam joins Violet, Xaden, Imogen, Garrick, Bodhi, Soleil, Eya, Ciaran, and Masen at Athebyne. When Violet learns that the marked ones have been keeping secrets from her, Liam becomes one of the people caught between loyalty to Xaden and his friendship with Violet. He admits that he cares about her, but that he owes Xaden everything.

At Resson, Liam chooses to fight against the venin and wyvern rather than abandon civilians. His farsight becomes crucial when he sees venin through the fog. During the battle, he also reveals his hidden second signet: ice wielding. This makes him one of the marked riders whose dragon bond carries more power than Navarre realizes.

Liam dies during the Battle of Resson after Deigh is killed by a wyvern while protecting Tairn. Because a rider’s life is bound to their dragon, Deigh’s death leads to Liam’s. In his final moments, Liam asks Violet to look after Sloane, to forgive Xaden, and to hear him out. His death becomes one of the emotional turning points of the series.

Iron Flame

Although Liam dies in Fourth Wing, his presence continues to shape Iron Flame. Violet hallucinates him while she is being tortured by Varrish, and the vision gives her comfort during one of the most brutal moments of the series. Whether the hallucination is simply Violet’s mind trying to survive or something sent by Malek is left open to interpretation.

Liam’s legacy also continues through Sloane Mairi. Before his death, Liam wrote a series of letters to his younger sister during his first year at Basgiath. Violet saves those letters before his belongings can be burned and later gives them to Sloane one at a time as a reward for training with Imogen.

Through those letters, Liam remains present even after his death. He becomes a bridge between Violet and Sloane, between grief and responsibility, and between the past of the marked ones and the future they are still fighting for.

Physical Description

Liam is described as tall, broad, and strongly built. He is as tall as Sawyer and as muscular as Dain, with the kind of physical strength that makes him stand out even among riders. Violet notes that he is about a head taller than most people around him.

He has spiky light-blond hair, blue eyes, a prominent nose, and dimples when he smiles. His appearance often reflects the contrast at the center of his character: he looks like a powerful rider, but he also has an easy warmth that makes people trust him.

As one of the marked ones, Liam bears a rebellion relic that begins at his wrist and disappears beneath his tunic sleeve. The relic is both a visible mark of punishment and a reminder of the protection rune his mother gave him before her execution.

Liam wears standard rider gear and carries the Gauntlet patch he earns for completing the course faster than anyone else in his year.

Personality

Liam is warm, loyal, brave, and quietly devastating as a character because he refuses to become bitter despite everything he has survived. He lost both parents, was separated from his sister, was branded as a marked one, and was forced into Basgiath, yet he still carries himself with humor and kindness.

He is fiercely loyal to Xaden. That loyalty comes from years of shared foster care, training, and survival after the Tyrrish Rebellion. Liam trusts Xaden completely and follows him into danger, but that loyalty does not make Liam blind or cruel. He still has his own moral center.

With Violet, Liam is protective without being dismissive. He worries about her safety, especially because Xaden asks him to guard her, but he also sees her courage and intelligence. He teases her, supports her, and eventually treats her as a true friend rather than simply an assignment.

Liam’s humor is one of his defining traits. He jokes in tense moments, flirts lightly with Jesinia, and uses teasing to make the brutality of Basgiath feel a little more survivable. That warmth is why his death hits so hard: Liam is not only useful in battle, he is loved.

At Resson, Liam’s final choices show exactly who he is. He fights for civilians he does not know, protects Tairn and Violet, and spends his last breaths thinking about Sloane, Xaden, and the people he loves. His courage is not loud or performative. It is steady, selfless, and final.

Powers

Lesser Magic

Through his bond with Deigh, Liam can channel lesser magic. Like other bonded riders, this allows him to unlock doors without touching them, move with preternatural speed, manipulate mage lights, power ink pens, and place runes.

Farsight

Liam’s primary signet is farsight, the ability to see great distances with unusual clarity. His pupils dilate when he uses the ability, and it allows him to see through conditions that would limit ordinary vision, such as fog.

This signet becomes especially important during the Battle of Resson, when Liam uses farsight to detect venin hidden in the mist. His power gives the group vital information in a battle where visibility and timing matter.

Ice Wielding

Liam also has a hidden second signet: ice wielding. He reveals this ability during the Battle of Resson, where he uses ice in combat against the venin and wyvern.

His second signet is significant because Deigh had previously bonded one of Liam’s ancestors. This suggests that some dragons intentionally bonded marked riders with family ties to former riders in order to strengthen the rebellion’s chances. Liam’s ice wielding proves that he was far more powerful than Navarre officially understood.

Abilities

Combat Skills

Liam is one of the strongest cadets in Violet’s year. He performs exceptionally during assessment challenges, defeats opponents with ease, and is considered one of the riders most likely to dominate on the sparring mat.

His combat ability is not only physical. Liam is fast, controlled, and brave under pressure. During battle, he can move between protection, reconnaissance, and direct combat without hesitation.

Gauntlet Skill

Liam completes the Gauntlet faster than anyone else in his year, earning the Gauntlet patch. This achievement shows his strength, balance, speed, and ability to stay focused under pressure.

Woodcarving

Liam is a talented woodcarver and often carves small dragon figures. This detail gives him a softer creative side and makes him feel more grounded outside the violence of Basgiath.

Sign Language and Hearing

Liam knows sign language and is also noted for having extremely good hearing. These skills make him more observant and useful in situations where quiet communication or awareness matters.

Relationships

Xaden RiorsonLiam and Xaden were fostered together in Tirvainne after their parents were executed. Xaden taught Liam how to fight and helped prepare him for the Riders Quadrant. Their bond is brotherly, built through grief, training, and survival. Liam repeatedly makes clear that he owes Xaden everything, and his loyalty to him is one of the strongest forces in his life.
Violet SorrengailLiam is first assigned to guard Violet because of Xaden, but their relationship becomes a genuine friendship. He protects her, teases her, accompanies her to Archives duty, and stands by her during some of her most dangerous moments at Basgiath. Even after Violet learns that Liam kept secrets from her, he insists that they are friends. His death at Resson leaves a lasting emotional wound for Violet.
Sloane MairiSloane is Liam’s younger sister. The siblings are separated after their parents’ deaths and do not reunite before Liam dies. Before his death, Liam writes Sloane a series of letters during his first year at Basgiath. Violet later saves those letters and gives them to Sloane one at a time, making Liam’s love for his sister a continuing part of the story.
Jesinia NeilwartLiam shares a light flirtationship with Jesinia Neilwart during his time at Basgiath. Their moments are brief, but they show Liam’s charm, humor, and ability to find warmth even in a brutal environment.
DeighDeigh is Liam’s bonded dragon, a red Daggertail. Their bond gives Liam access to lesser magic and his signets. Deigh’s death during the Battle of Resson causes Liam’s own death through the rider-dragon bond.
Catriona CordellaLiam is mentioned as someone who did not hate many people, but Catriona Cordella was on that short list. This detail adds a sharper edge to his otherwise warm personality and hints at conflict connected to Xaden’s past.

Dragon

Deigh

Liam is bonded to Deigh, a red Daggertail dragon. Through Deigh, Liam channels lesser magic and manifests farsight. Deigh’s previous bond to one of Liam’s ancestors also connects to Liam’s hidden second signet, ice wielding.

Deigh dies during the Battle of Resson after protecting Tairn from a wyvern. Because a rider’s life is tied to their dragon, Deigh’s death leads to Liam’s death shortly afterward. Their final moments are one of the clearest examples of how absolute and devastating the dragon-rider bond can be.
