Location

Deverelli is the southernmost isle located a two-day south journey by ship or twelve hours by dragon, south of Cordyn. It is defined by hot climate and endless lines of white beaches along turquoise waters. Moving towards the inland of the island soft green hills start to rise with stone structures spread across them. These structures belong to the capital city, Matyas, hidden by the trees.

East of Deverelli is a small barrier island that houses elegant manors with private docks and ships reflecting their owners’ status and wealth.

Creatures that can be found in Deverelli:

  • Follorinia Moths: Bioluminescent insects with translucent wings that light up when feeding on honeycomb. They are used as light sources in Deverelli, the blue glass orbs within King Courtlyn’s palace contain these glowing Moths.
  • Pure-White Panthers: King Courtlyn keeps three white panthers within his palace. Their white color seems to be special, potentially only found on this island. They are graceful and elegant with huge paws and soft fur.
  • Dolphinum: Aquatic creatures occasionally seen to make graceful leaps through the water.
  • Horses: Horses are used for transportation.

Culture

Residents of Deverelli do not worship gods, instead placing their faith in status, wealth, knowledge, and secrets. The island’s culture centers on science and alchemy, and most of its population is highly educated. This intellectual focus contributes to Deverelli’s neutrality and makes it an ideal hub for trade.

Although the citizens are largely unarmed, the island maintains a standing force known as the Guards, who wield spears tipped with serrated silver blades or axes. Deverellians are known for their refined appearance, often wearing lightweight tunics in white or gold, or gowns in soft pastel shades.

The term “Fire-bringer” is used as an insult to describe dragon riders.

In Deverelli word is blood. A trade is considered law.

Worship

While no single god dominates Deverelli, smaller shrines to multiple deities exist across the isle. This pluralistic approach to faith mirrors its mercantile culture, with devotion often tied to personal fortune or trade.

Relevance

In Onyx Storm, Violet and her squad travel to the Isles to form a task force in search of the seventh kind of dragon. Deverelli becomes their first destination because King Courtlyn agrees to an audience only if he is given the Amelian Citrine. While Halden negotiates with Courtlyn, Violet follows her father’s instructions to find Narelle Anselm. She is a bookseller holding volumes her father left behind. Violet secures six password-protected books after passing a test of knowledge.

Later, during the negotiation with King Courtlyn, Halden’s poor handling of the talks causes tensions to escalate into violence. Violet and Xaden are forced to intervene, and the situation is only defused when Andarna threatens Courtlyn’s panthers, compelling him to back down. Violet then takes over the negotiation herself. After the squad delivers the Amelian Citrine, she also offers Andarna’s rare eggshell, persuading Courtlyn to allow them to use Deverelli as a base for their search across the Isles. Courtlyn ultimately proposes his own bargain, demanding that Violet and Xaden work for him in exchange for weapons.

Notable Locations

Matyas The capital city of Deverelli, Matyas, is uniquely built beneath the canopy of enormous trees, their branches casting the bustling streets in shifting shade. It thrives as a vibrant trade hub, crowded with merchants, travelers, and emissaries from across the Isles. Known for its lively markets and cosmopolitan culture, the city embodies Deverelli’s mercantile spirit, where contracts and commerce outweigh faith or tradition. Positioned along the coastline, Matyas welcomes ships from neighboring kingdoms at its busy docks, while narrow streets wind inland toward palaces and estates. As both the political and cultural heart of Deverelli, it serves as the seat of King Courtlyn’s rule and the place.
Tomes and Tales A two-story bookstore within Matyas’ bustling market. Owned by Narelle Anselm, it houses six passcode-locked tomes left by Violet’s father, as well as other rare manuscripts. The interior is lined with tall bookshelves, scented by parchment and dust, lit by large windows, and furnished with worn armchairs—an oasis of knowledge in the noisy trade center.
Viscount Tecarus’ Estate Located ten miles east of Matyas, on Deverelli’s northern coast. The manor is a grand two-story structure with white pillars that allow cooling ocean breezes, but thick stone walls protect it against storms. Its grounds are lush, with palm-lined paths and valleys to the south rich in wild game. There’s a dock for ships bearing the Cordyn standard.
King Courtlyn’s Palace Built into the hillside of Matyas, the palace is ancient and imposing. With gray pillars marking its entrance, open-air chambers, and sheltered wings, it blends architecture and natural landscape. The palace includes a formal dining hall beneath sweeping palms, a meadow for dragons, treasuries, and courtyard spaces lit by glowing glass orbs filled with Fallorinia moths—all guarded by white-clad troops.
