Biography
Before Basgiath
Imogen Cardulo is the daughter of Tracila Cardulo and the younger sister of Katrina Cardulo, both of whom were involved in the Tyrrish Rebellion. After the rebellion failed, Imogen was forced to witness the executions of her mother and sister. Like the other children of the rebellion’s leaders, she was marked with a rebellion relic and punished for her family’s role in the uprising.
That trauma shapes much of Imogen’s early character. She does not enter Basgiath as someone looking for glory or approval from Navarre. She enters as one of the marked ones: watched, hated, underestimated, and forced into the Riders Quadrant under a system that wants her controlled or dead.
Imogen is also deeply loyal to the other marked ones. Her closest friendship is with Quinn, whom she meets on Conscription Day before crossing the Parapet. Their bond becomes one of the most important emotional anchors in Imogen’s life, especially as the series reveals more of what the marked ones survived together.
Fourth Wing
In Fourth Wing, Imogen is introduced as a second-year rider in Flame Section. Violet first notices her pink hair, rebellion relic, and intimidating presence. Their first real interaction happens on the sparring mat, where Imogen’s hatred for Lilith Sorrengail spills directly onto Violet.
Imogen initially sees Violet as the daughter of the woman responsible for her family’s execution. Their first fight is violent and personal, leaving Violet badly injured and establishing Imogen as one of the most hostile marked riders in Violet’s early Basgiath experience.
But Imogen is not only angry. She is also disciplined, skilled, and trusted within Xaden’s circle. At the secret meetings of the marked ones, she is one of the older riders involved in protecting and training younger marked cadets. Xaden considers her one of their best fighters, close to Garrick’s level, and more patient as a trainer.
After Violet bonds Tairn and Andarna, Imogen’s attitude toward her begins to shift. Violet’s life becomes tied to Xaden’s through the dragon bond, which means protecting Violet becomes necessary. Imogen starts training Violet in the weight room, helping her strengthen the muscles around her joints and survive the physical demands of the Riders Quadrant.
Over time, Imogen begins to see that Violet is more than Lilith Sorrengail’s daughter. Violet proves herself through intelligence, strategy, and courage, especially during Squad Battles and the Battle of Resson. Imogen’s respect for Violet grows slowly, but once it does, it becomes real.
Imogen is also involved in the rebellion’s secret weapon-smuggling operation. During the Montserrat trip, she is sent on a covert weapon drop while using her memory-erasing signet to cover her tracks. By the end of Fourth Wing, it is clear that Imogen is not just another cadet — she is an active participant in the hidden war Navarre is trying to bury.
At Athebyne, Imogen is part of Xaden’s group when they discover the outpost has been abandoned and the civilians of Resson have been left exposed. When the choice comes to fight or run, Imogen chooses to defend the defenseless. She survives the Battle of Resson and helps carry the truth of venin, wyvern, and Navarre’s lies into Iron Flame.
Iron Flame
In Iron Flame, Imogen returns to Basgiath with Xaden’s group after the Battle of Resson. Their return complicates Navarre’s official story, since the group had been presumed dead after War Games.
Imogen becomes more important in Violet’s daily life during this book. She runs with Violet in the mornings, trains with her, watches her more closely, and becomes one of the people who understands the pressure Violet is under. Their relationship is not soft or sentimental, but it becomes one of trust, blunt honesty, and practical support.
Imogen also helps Violet with Sloane Mairi. Although Sloane resents Violet for Liam’s death, Imogen recognizes that Sloane is badly undertrained and vulnerable in the Riders Quadrant. Her concern for Sloane shows a more protective side of her character. Imogen can be harsh, but she does not ignore weakness when someone needs help surviving.
Her classified signet becomes especially useful during the Archives heist. Imogen’s ability to erase recent memories makes her the group’s last line of defense when Violet, Xaden, Aaric, and Jesinia attempt to retrieve the journals connected to the First Six. Her role in this mission proves how valuable she is in covert operations, not just open combat.
After Violet is taken and tortured by Varrish, Imogen leaves Basgiath with the others and returns to Aretia. There, she continues working with the rebellion as Aretia becomes a new center of resistance. She also becomes part of the larger effort to integrate riders and fliers, though her loyalty remains firmly with her people and the survival of Tyrrendor.
By the end of Iron Flame, Imogen fights in the defense of Basgiath and the Vale. She is no longer simply the hostile second-year who injured Violet on Assessment Day. She has become one of Violet’s allies, one of Xaden’s trusted people, and one of the rebellion’s most useful fighters.
Onyx Storm
In Onyx Storm, Imogen’s role deepens again as the rebellion faces even more instability. After Xaden draws power from the earth and begins struggling with venin influence, Imogen becomes one of the people watching over him. Along with Garrick and Bodhi, she helps monitor the danger Xaden now represents, even while remaining loyal to him.
This is an important shift for Imogen. Her loyalty to Xaden has always been fierce, but Onyx Storm forces her to balance that loyalty with caution. She understands that protecting the rebellion may sometimes mean questioning the people she loves and trusts most.
Imogen’s emotional arc also becomes more visible through Quinn. Losing Quinn, her closest friend and squadmate, devastates her. The loss cuts through Imogen’s usual sharpness and reveals how deeply she feels beneath the sarcasm and armor. Even then, she keeps moving because the rebellion cannot afford for her to stop.
Her bond with Violet also strengthens. The two women have moved far beyond their early hostility. They are not sentimental with each other, but they understand each other’s pain, pressure, and survival instincts. Imogen becomes one of the people Violet can trust to be honest, even when that honesty is brutal.
Her connection with Garrick also becomes harder to ignore in Onyx Storm. Their banter, arguments, and mutual awareness suggest feelings neither of them is ready to name directly. Imogen’s usual confidence becomes slightly more vulnerable around Garrick, making their slow-burn dynamic one of the more understated relationships in the series.
Physical Description
Imogen is known for her distinctive pink hair, which is often described as half-shaved and styled practically for training, fighting, or flying. Her appearance makes her immediately recognizable among the riders at Basgiath.
She has green eyes, a toned body, and an athletic build suited to combat. Violet notes that Imogen is about a head taller than her and carries herself with the confidence of someone who knows exactly how dangerous she is.
Imogen also bears a rebellion relic, the dark lines marking her as one of the 107 children of the rebellion’s leaders. Her relic is not only a physical mark, but a reminder of the execution of her family, Navarre’s punishment of the marked ones, and the reason she fights.
Her beauty is often framed through her brutality. Imogen is striking, but she is never written as delicate. Her appearance, attitude, and fighting style all reinforce the same impression: she is sharp, fast, and dangerous.
Personality
Imogen is blunt, sharp, and often ruthless. She does not soften her words, and she rarely wastes time pretending to be kinder than she feels. In Fourth Wing, this makes her one of Violet’s earliest enemies, especially because Imogen’s grief and rage are tied directly to Lilith Sorrengail.
But Imogen is not cruel for the sake of cruelty. Her hardness comes from loss, survival, and years of being treated as a traitor for her parents’ choices. She has learned to be practical because softness can get people killed at Basgiath.
She is fiercely loyal to her people. Imogen protects the marked ones, trusts Xaden, loves Quinn, and eventually grows protective of Violet and Sloane. Her care rarely looks gentle, but it is consistent. She trains people, warns them, pushes them, and refuses to let them stay weak if weakness will kill them.
Imogen also has a dry, cutting sense of humor. She teases Violet, Xaden, Garrick, Bodhi, and the rest of the squad with little hesitation. Her sarcasm often works as a shield, but it also shows how comfortable she becomes around the people she trusts.
Her growth across the series lies in her ability to separate inherited anger from present truth. She begins by seeing Violet as Lilith Sorrengail’s daughter, but eventually recognizes Violet’s choices, courage, and loyalty. Imogen does not become softer exactly — she becomes more discerning, more emotionally honest, and more willing to let people earn her trust.
Powers
Lesser Magic
Like all bonded riders, Imogen can channel lesser magic through her bond with Glane. This allows her to unlock doors without touching them, move with preternatural speed, manipulate mage lights, power ink pens, and place runes.
Recent Memory Erasure
Imogen’s first signet allows her to erase recent memories. This is a classified and highly useful ability, especially in covert missions. She uses it to cover tracks, protect secrets, and help the rebellion move without leaving obvious evidence behind.
Because her signet affects memory, it has obvious intelligence and interrogation value. That makes it one of the more dangerous signets in the series, not because it is loud or destructive, but because it can quietly remove what someone knows.
Petrification / Earth Wielding
Imogen’s second signet is connected to petrification or earth-wielding, allowing her to turn objects into stone. This gives her another layer of combat usefulness and makes her more dangerous than Navarre’s official records suggest.
Together, her two signets make her valuable in very different kinds of conflict. Memory erasure is useful for secrecy and infiltration, while petrification gives her a more physical, battlefield-oriented power.
Abilities
Combat Skill
Imogen is one of the strongest fighters among the marked ones. Xaden places her near Garrick’s level, though he notes that Imogen is more patient as a trainer. Her combat style is fast, efficient, and unforgiving.
She trains younger marked cadets, Violet Sorrengail, and Sloane Mairi. Her training is not gentle, but it works. Imogen understands that Basgiath does not reward weakness, so she pushes others to become strong enough to survive.
Speed
Imogen is repeatedly noted for her speed. She is one of the fastest riders in combat and uses agility as one of her biggest advantages. Her speed makes her difficult to hit and allows her to overwhelm opponents before they can properly react.
In Iron Flame, Imogen begins running with Violet to build endurance. The habit is practical, but it also shows how the trauma of battle has changed both of them. They know what it means to not be fast enough, and they refuse to stay that way.
Relationships
| Violet Sorrengail | Imogen and Violet begin as enemies. Imogen blames Lilith Sorrengail for the deaths of her mother and sister, and Violet becomes the easiest target for that rage. After Threshing, their dynamic changes because Violet’s life becomes tied to Xaden’s. Imogen begins training her, and over time, hatred turns into respect. By Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, Imogen becomes one of Violet’s bluntest but most reliable allies. |
|---|---|
| Xaden Riorson | Imogen is one of Xaden’s trusted people and a loyal member of his inner circle. She supports the rebellion, helps with secret operations, trains those he asks her to train, and knows more about his world than most. Their relationship is built on trust, shared history, and loyalty to the marked ones. She also knows him well enough to tease him, especially about Violet. |
| Garrick Tavis | Imogen’s relationship with Garrick is full of tension, teasing, and unresolved attraction. Their banter often hides deeper feelings, especially on Imogen’s side. They argue, fight beside each other, and know exactly how to irritate one another. By Onyx Storm, their connection becomes more obvious, even if neither of them openly defines it. |
| Quinn | Quinn is Imogen’s closest friend and squadmate. Their friendship begins on Conscription Day and becomes one of Imogen’s most important relationships. Quinn is the person Imogen trusts with her emotional life, including topics she refuses to discuss with Violet. Quinn’s death in Onyx Storm devastates Imogen and exposes the grief beneath her usual sarcasm and control. |
| Bodhi Durran | Imogen and Bodhi are close allies within Xaden’s circle. They often work together during the rebellion’s operations and share the responsibility of protecting the marked ones left at Basgiath after Xaden graduates. Their dynamic includes a lot of banter, but also deep trust. |
| Sloane Mairi | Imogen becomes one of the people most aware of how underprepared Sloane is for the Riders Quadrant. Although she is blunt with her, Imogen wants Sloane to survive and repeatedly tries to push her toward training. Her concern for Sloane shows how her protective instincts extend beyond her closest friends. |
Dragon
Glane
Imogen is bonded to Glane, an orange Daggertail dragon. Orange dragons are known for their unpredictability, while Daggertails are dangerous because of the weapon-like spikes at the ends of their tails.
Together, Imogen and Glane form a fast, aggressive rider-dragon pair. Imogen’s speed, combat skill, and rare signets make her dangerous on the ground, while Glane adds the force and aerial power of a bonded dragon. Their bond makes Imogen one of the rebellion’s most useful fighters in both covert missions and open battle.
