Location
Spirefell is located within Paladia, set apart from the dense urban core. Unlike most later construction in the city, the estate exists as a single, freestanding structure rather than part of a vertical complex.
Description
Spirefell was built of iron by Urius Ferron as a deliberate celebration of the family’s resonance and status. The structure is vast and cavernous, marked by shadowed halls, filigreed metalwork, and weak electric lighting that barely penetrates the interior gloom. A large central foyer is overlooked by multiple landings, with ornate staircases and darkened corridors extending deeper into the house.
The interior is dominated by iron and stone, including a mosaic inlaid into the marble floor surrounding a central table. High windows are positioned to direct light inward with precision, illuminating specific spaces while leaving much of the house in shadow. Despite its grandeur, Spirefell is described as deteriorated and untended, with stale air and a pervasive sense of decay.
The estate includes extensive grounds, including formal gardens and a large hedge maze visible from the upper rooms.
Due to its iron construction and unique alchemical properties, Spirefell functions as a secure holding site for dangerous prisoners.
Relevance
Spirefell stands as a symbol of the Ferron family’s long-standing influence and the cost of their opposition to the Holdfast-dominated regime. The Ferrons predate the Holdfasts’ rise to power and were frequent targets of persecution by the Order of the Eternal Flame.
After the war, Helena Marino is brought to Spirefell to be interrogated by Kaine Ferron, who at the time serves as High Reeve. The interrogation is intended to uncover what Helena is hiding and to assess the nature and limits of her abilities, making Spirefell the site where their initial power dynamic and mistrust are established.
