Biography / History
Atreus Ferron was the Iron Guildmaster of Paladia and the patriarch of House Ferron. The Ferrons were one of New Paladia’s oldest families, with a regional presence predating the Holdfasts. Historically, the family was associated with blacksmithing and ironmongery and has repeatedly come into conflict with the Order of the Eternal Flame. Atreus is known for speaking publicly against the Holdfast-led regime. He is arrested by the Eternal Flame and later executed.
Atreus Ferron married Enid Ferron, a silver alchemist affiliated with the Alchemy Institute. Enid originated from a minor noble family and possessed moderate alchemical talent. The marriage is unexpected, as iron and silver are incompatible metals, and the union placed Enid above Atreus in station, if not wealth.
The marriage followed multiple miscarriages, attributed to resonance incompatibility. During a later pregnancy, physicians identify signs consistent with vivimancy in the child. Despite warnings, Atreus employs vivimancers to manage the pregnancy. He is arrested for this action and detained for several weeks.
During his detention, Enid Ferron gives birth to Kaine Ferron. Following Kaine’s birth, the family withdraws to their country estate. Enid does not return to public life. Atreus rarely speaks of her thereafter.
Rumors circulate within the guilds that Kaine Ferron is a Lapse. To dispel these rumors and retain control of the iron guilds, Atreus Ferron later presents Kaine to guild society and enrolls him at the Alchemy Institute.
Atreus is controlling of Kaine, motivated by fear that any sign of vivimancy would trigger intervention by the Eternal Flame. Jan Crowther is assigned as Kaine’s academic advisor and observer during his time at the Institute.
During Atreus Ferron’s imprisonment, Enid Ferron is subjected to vivimantic torture. Kaine Ferron later kills Principate Apollo Holdfast in an attempt to stop this abuse. Enid never recovers from the prolonged torture and dies at home.
Atreus is executed by the Eternal Flame. Following the war, Atreus Ferron returns as a lich, inhabiting the body of Jan Crowther.
In this form, he confronts Helena Marino regarding Kaine Ferron’s fate. He consents to Helena’s attempt to save Kaine, stating that Enid Ferron would have wanted their son to live.
