Biography / History
Jan Crowther was orphaned as a child by a necromancer in the far north-eastern reaches of the continent. He is brought to Paladia as a sponsored student and later attends the Alchemy Institute. He joins the Order of the Eternal Flame and fights in the crusades against necromancy in surrounding countries, until he is injured and his right arm is paralysed.
Crowther becomes one of the five members of the Eternal Flame’s Council. He joins the faculty at the Institute when Helena Marino is fifteen. Students assume he is appointed to train Luc Holdfast due to the rarity of pyromancers, but Luc has nothing to do with Crowther. After less than a year, Crowther leaves, then immediately returns after Principate Apollo’s assassination.
During the war, Jan Crowther is involved in negotiations with Kaine Ferron on behalf of the Order of the Eternal Flame. These negotiations place Crowther in direct contact with Kaine during periods of instability and are conducted under Council authority.
Following these negotiations, Crowther is assigned as Helena Marino’s handler in matters concerning Kaine Ferron. In this role, he functions as the formal intermediary and supervisory authority for interactions between Helena and Kaine, ensuring that their contact remains controlled, monitored, and institutionally sanctioned.
In addition to these responsibilities, Crowther participates in the interrogation and torture of prisoners held by the Order during the war. These interrogations are carried out with the involvement of Helena Marino and Ivy Purnell, as part of the Eternal Flame’s internal enforcement and intelligence operations.
After the war, Atreus Ferron inhabits Crowther’s body as a lich.
