Location

Tyrrendor is the southernmost and largest province of Navarre. Its geography is dominated by steep, mountainous terrain, especially the towering Cliffs of Dralor, which rise over twelve thousand feet and form an almost impassable natural barrier along much of its western and southern borders. These cliffs separate Tyrrendor from Poromiel and significantly shape both defense and identity.

Culture

Tyrrendor is defined by traditions that have endured despite centuries of suppression. The most significant of these is the use of runes, still deeply embedded in Tyrrish architecture. Before their practice was banned a few centuries after the Unification of Navarre, Tyrrendor perfected the art of tempering runes. A craft that once gave the province great influence. Other customs, such as Tyrrish knots or scar carving to mark responsibility, have mostly faded. The architectural runes remain the last preserved aspect of Tyrrish culture. This legacy, along with the memory of the Tyrrish Rebellion, continues to shape the province’s identity and its people’s sense of resilience and defiance.

Relevance

Tyrrendor is the largest and southernmost province of Navarre, known for its rugged geography and its political significance as the center of the Tyrrish Rebellion. The rebellion—called the apostasy by the Tyrrish—culminated in the burning of Aretia, its capital. Though much of the city’s stone architecture survived, Aretia was stripped of its status and the House of Lewellen assumed governance under the Treaty of Aretia. The aftermath reshaped the province: rebel leaders were executed in Calldyr or within their own homes, loyalist nobles were granted the great houses, and Navarre-loyal Tyrrish riders were promoted while rebels were killed or executed. Despite these measures, surviving families and sympathizers formed the Assembly, sparking the Revolution to continue the cause of Tyrrish independence.

By the time of Fourth Wing, Tyrrendor remains restless. Protests against Navarre’s harsh conscription laws erupt frequently, and because of its vast size, Tyrrendor provides the majority of conscripts to replenish Navarre’s front lines.

King Tauri later restores the Riorson family’s title, naming Xaden Riorson Duke of Tyrrendor. At the conclusion of Onyx Storm, Xaden’s marriage to Violet Sorrengail elevates her as Duchess of Tyrrendor, binding the province’s rebellious legacy to the series’ central figures.

Notable Locations

Aretia Aretia was once the capital of Tyrrendor, a city in the province’s eastern reaches. During the Tyrrish Rebellion it was burned in the Battle of Aretia, though many of its stone buildings survived. Left in ruins, it became a symbol of loss and resistance, viewed by Navarre as the heart of the apostasy and punished under the Treaty of Aretia. In later years, the Revolution began rebuilding the city, transforming it into a refuge and center of governance. Today Aretia houses forges, printing presses, and quarters for its growing population of civilians, cadets, and dragons. At its core stands Riorson House, the fortress-like seat of the Riorson family.
Cliffs of Dralor A massive range of cliffs that act as a natural barrier against Poromiel; they make much of Tyrrendor’s western and southern approaches difficult for flying creatures to cross.
Gianfar An ancient fortress on Tyrrendor’s southern border, remembered as the site of the Battle of Gianfar more than six centuries ago. Designed for siege warfare, it was the first stronghold equipped with cross-bolts.
Tirvainne A city in Tyrrendor where Duke Lindell resides.
Lewellen Lewellen is a city in Tyrrendor and the seat of House Lewellen. After the fall of House Riorson during the Tyrrish Rebellion, governance of the province was transferred to Duke Lewellen under the Treaty of Aretia, making the family responsible for representing Tyrrendor within Navarre. Though the transfer marked a shift in power from rebels to loyalists, Xaden later reveals in Iron Flame that House Lewellen has aligned itself with the Revolution.
