Biography
Codagh is a black swordtail dragon and elder of his den, bonded to General Augustine Melgren in Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series. Revered as one of the most powerful dragons alive, Codagh is even larger than Tairneanach and carries the weight of centuries of battle. As den elder, he holds the rare ability to “sense pigment,” allowing him to foresee the adult coloration of feathertails.
Codagh gained notoriety in 628 AU when he executed the leaders of the Tyrrish Rebellion at Calldyr, unknowingly activating protective runes placed on their children that would later resist dragon fire and Melgren’s signet.
In Fourth Wing, he appears at Threshing, where Violet describes him as a nightmare given form. In Iron Flame, Codagh plays a decisive role when the wards of Navarre threaten to fail, carrying Melgren to pivotal negotiations and later lending his fire to help restore the broken wards of Basgiath.
Physical Description
- The largest dragon in Fourth Wing, standing about 1.5 meters (roughly 5 feet) taller than Tairneanach.
- A massive black swordtail with wings scarred and patched from countless battles.
- Golden eyes that gleam with menace.
- Jaws lined with long, razor-sharp teeth.
Powers and Abilities
Like all dragons, Codagh can breathe fire and fight with his swordtail, talons, and fangs. As den elder, he possesses the rare ability to sense pigment, determining what color feathertails will mature into. His immense strength, size, and battle experience make him one of the most formidable dragons in existence.
