Andarna (Andarnaurram)

Biography

Andarnaurram, more commonly known as Andarna, is an adolescent Irid dragon in Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series, appearing in Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm. Unlike other dragons, she belongs to the mysterious Seventh Breed, giving her the ability to change the color of her scales.

Laid centuries before Violet’s Threshing, Andarna remained unhatched for over six hundred years until she heard dragons discussing Violet Sorrengail and chose her as the rider she had been waiting for. During Threshing, Violet defended her from cadets intent on killing her, prompting both Andarna and Tairneanach to bond with Violet, creating the first dual bond in generations. Though too young to bear a rider, Andarna displayed rare power when she stopped time to save Violet, an ability that left her exhausted for days.

In Iron Flame, the overuse of her abilities during the Battle of Resson forced her into accelerated growth, transforming her from a feathertail hatchling into a black scorpiontail adolescent. Her interrupted Dreamless Sleep left her with incomplete wing development, preventing her from ever carrying a rider. Despite this, she remains fiercely loyal to Violet, often supporting her with both magic and sharp defiance. By Onyx Storm, Andarna embraces her identity as part of the Seventh Breed, torn between loyalty to Violet and the call of her true kin.
