Biography / History
Luc Holdfast was born into the Holdfast line of Paladia, a family closely tied to the leadership of the Order of the Eternal Flame. He was educated within Paladia’s institutional structures and later attended the Alchemy Institute.
During his time at the Alchemy Institute, Luc formed a close friendship with Helena Marino. This relationship remained significant throughout his life and existed outside the formal hierarchies of the Order.
Luc’s rise to leadership followed the murder of his father by Kaine Ferron. In the aftermath, Luc was elevated to the position of Principate at the age of sixteen. The decision was made by the Order to preserve political continuity during a period of instability.
Because of his age, many responsibilities associated with the role were assumed by his great-aunt, Ilva. Ilva acted as his guardian and principal decision-maker, overseeing political, administrative, and strategic matters on his behalf. This arrangement allowed the Order to maintain formal authority while limiting Luc’s direct involvement in governance during his early years as Principate.
As Luc grew older, he gradually assumed greater public responsibility as Principate, though major decisions continued to be shaped by institutional structures and Ilva’s influence. He remained in the role throughout the war.
Luc was assigned a Paladin Primary for protection: Lila Bayard. Their professional relationship later became personal and was concealed due to the political consequences such a connection would have carried.
Luc was captured during the war and later returned from captivity. Upon his return, he was possessed by Morrough. Under Morrough’s influence, Luc became a central instrument in the destruction of the Order of the Eternal Flame and the collapse of its authority within Paladia. Luc Holdfast did not survive the events that followed.
Physical Description
Luc Holdfast was smaller in both build and height than most of those around him, with a lighter frame than the Principate guard. His hair was golden and caught the light in the setting sun. He had a beautiful face and eyes as blue as a summer sky.
He wore an ignition ring on his thumb.
Personality
Luc was reserved and introspective, preferring private discussion to public display. He showed discomfort with overt reverence and symbolic authority and did not respond well to the performative aspects of leadership expected of a Principate.
He formed deep, loyal bonds with a small number of people and relied on them for grounding and emotional stability. The demands of leadership weighed heavily on him, and he struggled to reconcile personal restraint with the expectations placed upon him by the Order.
Alchemical Abilities
Pyromancy
Luc was a trained pyromancer of the Eternal Flame. His use of fire emphasized control and precision rather than large-scale destructive output. He favored ignition, containment, and symbolic application over battlefield deployment.
Animancy
Luc possessed animantic resonance affecting emotional perception and attention. This manifested as an ability to alter the atmosphere of a space and influence group focus or emotional alignment. During much of his life, this effect was assumed to be an extension of his pyromancy or the authority of his position.
The nature of this resonance was not fully recognized until later. Animancy was heavily stigmatized due to its association with Orion, whose actions led to the persecution and eradication of others with similar abilities. There is no indication that Luc intentionally trained or consciously used animancy.
