Location
Adriata is the capital city of the Summer Court and one of its four major urban centers. The city is built along a half-moon bay on the mainland, encircling the water on three sides. At the center of the bay rises a mountain-island crowned by the Summer Court palace, the seat of High Lord Tarquin. Prince Varian and Princess Cresseida also reside in Adriata.
Description
Adriata is a coastal city surrounded by a bright turquoise sea and a hot, dry climate, moderated only slightly by breezes from the water. The city extends around and below the palace’s mountain-island, spreading toward the shoreline. Its buildings feature red roofs and are constructed from the same tan stone as the palace, with some structures made from white, coral- or pearl-like material.
Gulls commonly fly over the city’s turrets and spires, carried by clear skies and salt-heavy air. Numerous bridges link the palace’s island to the surrounding mainland, including several drawbridges that lift to allow ships to pass. Adriata’s harbor is densely packed with vessels—merchant ships, fishing boats, and ferries transporting people between the island and the mainland, whose sloping shores are lined with additional buildings and residents.
Relevance
Adriata suffered damage during Amarantha’s rule, as parts of the city were destroyed under her control. In A Court of Mist and Fury, Rhysand, Amren, and Feyre visit Adriata to obtain the Prythian half of the Book of Breathings, meeting with High Lord Tarquin as well as Prince Varian and Princess Cresseida. In A Court of Wings and Ruin, the city is attacked by Hybern’s army. After Varian alerts Amren, Rhysand and the Night Court’s Inner Circle, supported by a legion of Illyrians, winnow to Adriata to aid in its defense. Hybern’s forces are repelled, and the city later serves as a refuge for mortals.
