Montserrat

Montserrat is a forward military outpost in the Morraine Province of Navarre, near the Cygnisen border and about 200 miles from the Emerald Sea. Positioned in the Esben Mountains, it serves as a strategic defense point and staging ground for border operations. The outpost lies roughly six hours by dragon flight from Basgiath War College.

Known for its milder mountain climate, Montserrat remains active year-round, its spring temperatures similar to early summer at Basgiath. The fortress itself is heavily fortified, enclosed by four massive walls with corner turrets and a spiked portcullis guarding the main gate.

Inside, a mud-prone courtyard connects key facilities, including a stable, blacksmith, armory, and dining hall. An infirmary is also present, though its exact location is unrecorded. Despite its isolated position, Montserrat functions as one of Navarre’s busiest outposts, sustaining both infantry and rider forces assigned to patrol the mountainous borderlands.

During the events of Fourth Wing, Mira Sorrengail is stationed at the Montserrat outpost. Violet Sorrengail and her squad later visit as a reward for winning the squad battles. While there, Imogen Cardulo fakes an illness to join a supply run with a drift of gryphon fliers. During the same visit, the wards falter and a gryphon drift attacks the outpost. Xaden Riorson later confirms that the Revolution has no operations in the area, suggesting another unknown cause behind the disturbance.

Barracks	Double-occupancy rooms (two beds, wardrobes, single desk under a wide window) with a shared bathing chamber; courtyard door and stairs up to the briefing room and a turret leading to the roof.
Briefing Room	In the highest turret, windowed with mountain views; a long table and a large wall map; spiral stair to barracks below and roof above.
Rhiannon Matthias’ Village	Less than an hour on foot (or a five-minute flight); on the Cygnisen border; villagers train in self-defense from a young age.
Raegan Matthias’ House	Simple home with cushioned benches by a dining table, fireplace, pewter mugs; humid April nights and a path running past the door.
