Location

Unnbriel, also known as the Isle of Dunne, is located a nine hour flight west of Deverelli. The coastline is defined by white-capped teal waters, crashing onto cream-colored beaches. It hosts a port city that is protected by walls and cross-bolts. Moving inland, the beaches become rocky, eventually turning to rolling hills covered in thick vegetation. The island’s climate is similar to that of Deverelli, hot and humid.

There are multiple towns on the island moving inland from the port city, featuring substantial fortifications. The capital city, Eistol, is heavily fortified and located inland on the tallest hill for miles.

Culture

The Unnbrish practice trial by combat where victorious combatants earn entrance to their court at the rank of their defeated opponent. Cavalry soldiers patrol the streets wearing pale green, pale blue or silver leather armor with metal chest plates bearing the symbol of goddess Dunne – two crossed swords gripped in the center with a claw. Before meeting the queen, visitors must undergo a ritual to prove their worth. The process involves choosing a champions to face the Unnbrish in trial by combat.

The Unnbrish call riders and dragons “fire-bringers” and “fire-breathers” respectively. The inhabitants terrified reactions to dragons is explained by absence of dragons on the isle for centuries.

Trial for Queen’s Audience

Before meeting the queen, visitors must undergo a ritual to prove themselves. The process involves:

  • The visitors request an audience with the Queen to commander of the guard.
  • The party must select its champions to face the Unnbrish in trial by combat.
  • A high priestess of Dunne meets the challengers in the plaza spilling a small amount of the contestants blood in offering to Dunne.
  • Fighters negotiate and agree on a single type of weapon for combat.
  • The fight proceeds until one side yields or is defeated.

Worship

Unnbriel worships Dunne, goddess of war. Blood offerings are considered the highest devotion, and cowardice is the gravest sin; these beliefs underpin the trial-by-combat custom before royal audiences.

Relevance

In Onyx Storm, the search squad visits Unnbriel as part of their larger mission to search for the seventh kind of dragon. To gain Queen Marlis’s support, Violet and her companions must first face a trial by combat, reflecting the isle’s devotion to Dunne and its culture of strength. During their audience, Marlis sets strict terms: if they can deliver twelve dragon eggs—two from each breed—she will send her army to join the fight against the Venin.

Notable Locations

Eistol The capital of Unnbriel is a terraced hilltop city built in concentric rings that climb upward like a fortress against the sky. Designed with dragon warfare in mind, its thick terrace walls are strong enough to support the weight of dragons and their riders. Cross-bolts mounted across the defenses can pivot in multiple directions to repel aerial assaults. Despite the fact that Unnbriel has not seen dragons in centuries, its architecture reflects a culture shaped by vigilance and reverence for strength. The uniform pale-blue rooftops and orderly streets of Eistol reflect both its martial preparedness and its religious devotion, marking the city as the heart of Unnbriel’s culture and political power.
The Plaza The plaza is where the trial for the Queen’s audience takes place. It had stood for seven hundred years before Violet cracks it in two with lightning.
Temple of Dunne Within Eistol, the Third Ring and its central Plaza form one of the most important gathering places, where stone-carved steps and tiered seating lead to the Temple of Dunne. This space not only functions as a civic center but also as the site for ceremonial trials by combat. This reinforcing Unnbriel’s belief that worthiness must be proven through battle before an audience with the queen is granted. The temple is equal in height to Tairn.
