Biography
Sgaeyl is a rare navy-blue daggertail dragon. She is bonded to Xaden Riorson and mated to Tairneanach, with whom she shares one of the strongest mating bonds in centuries.
Born from the Gormfaileas line, Sgaeyl was previously bonded to Xaden’s grandfather before refusing to bond for fifty years. During Xaden’s Threshing, she chose him as her rider despite tradition warning against bonding direct descendants of former riders. This decision granted Xaden not only the shadow-wielding signet but also a second, rare inntinnsic signet.
In Fourth Wing, Sgaeyl plays a central role in shaping Xaden’s authority and survival, while also influencing the fate of Violet Sorrengail and her bond with Tairneanach. By Onyx Storm, her loyalty to Xaden is tested following his transformation into a venin, during which she remains silent for weeks before confronting him directly. Fierce, ruthless, and feared even among dragons, Sgaeyl is nonetheless protective of her rider, cementing her place as one of the most formidable dragons of the Empyrean.

Powers and Abilities
Sgaeyl channels immense magical power through her bond, granting her rider access to lesser magic and rare signets. Her strength enabled Xaden to manifest both shadow-wielding and inntinnsic abilities. Like all dragons, she can fly, breathe fire, and wield her daggertail, talons, and fangs as weapons. She communicates telepathically with Xaden, other dragons, and gryphons, and has the rare ability to sense runes and reach other minds at will.
