Biography

Fourth Wing

Jesinia Neilwart is a cadet in the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath War College and one of Violet Sorrengail’s closest friends outside the Riders Quadrant. She is deaf, communicates through sign language, and works in the Archives, where her access to books, scrolls, and records makes her quietly important to the truth behind Navarre’s history.

Jesinia has known Violet for years before the events of Fourth Wing. In the year before Conscription Day, the two studied together for the Scribe Quadrant entrance exam, which Jesinia later credits as part of the reason she succeeds. While Violet is ultimately forced into the Riders Quadrant, Jesinia follows the path Violet once expected for herself and becomes a scribe cadet at Basgiath.

In Fourth Wing, Jesinia works in the Archives and helps cadets, professors, and riders find the correct texts and scrolls. Violet often speaks with her during Archive duty, and Jesinia remains one of the few familiar, safe people Violet can turn to inside Basgiath. Although scribes are expected to remain neutral and emotionless, Jesinia’s loyalty to Violet is clear from the beginning.

Iron Flame

Jesinia’s role becomes much more important in Iron Flame. She is the strongest scribe in her year and appears to be pursuing the adept path, the most difficult route for scribes and the one required for anyone who wants to become Curator of the Scribe Quadrant. Her academic skills place her close to the heart of Basgiath’s controlled information system.

When Violet begins researching the wards, the First Six, and the hidden truth about venin and wyvern, Jesinia becomes one of her most valuable allies. At first, Violet is careful not to reveal too much, knowing that official book requests can be dangerous. Jesinia eventually makes it clear that she has already been protecting Violet by not recording her requests, showing that she understands more than Violet has said aloud.

Jesinia’s quiet defiance grows into open rebellion. She helps Violet access restricted texts, trades books off the record, and develops safer ways to exchange information. Her actions are dangerous because the Scribe Quadrant is not simply a place of learning; it is also part of the system that controls what Navarre’s citizens and cadets are allowed to know.

After learning more about the lies surrounding Navarre’s history, Jesinia joins the Revolution and goes to Aretia. There, she helps establish a printing press, making her work central to spreading information beyond the limits imposed by Basgiath and Navarre’s leadership. Her rebellion is not loud or violent, but it is powerful because it attacks the system at its foundation: the control of truth.

Onxy Storm

In Onyx Storm, Jesinia faces punishment for her choices. Colonel Markham removes her from the adept path and claims she failed three exams, though Sawyer explains that he designed the tests to make her fail as punishment for deserting Basgiath and going to Aretia. Professor Grady takes command of her, and Jesinia becomes the designated scribe for the quest squad.

As part of the quest squad, Jesinia researches important texts for Violet’s mission and records official discussions. The group later includes Jesinia among the few people told that Xaden has turned venin, because her research may help them understand whether they can slow or stop his progression. This moment shows how much trust the group places in her knowledge and judgment.

After the events of the Empyrean series, Jesinia is revealed to become Curator of the Scribe Quadrant at Basgiath War College. She is responsible for translating the events of the rebellion into the modern language, preserving the truth of what happened and honoring the names of those who died. Her future role makes her one of the most important keepers of the series’ history.

Personality

Jesinia is intelligent, observant, careful, and quietly courageous. As a scribe, she is trained to control her emotions and avoid revealing too much, but her loyalty to Violet and her growing resistance to Navarre’s lies show that she is far from passive. She may appear calm on the surface, but her choices become increasingly brave as the series continues.

She does not enjoy violence and worries about Violet’s safety in the Riders Quadrant. This makes her different from many characters surrounding Violet, who are either trained for combat or forced to normalize danger. Jesinia’s concern keeps her grounded and reminds readers that not everyone at Basgiath views death and brutality as acceptable parts of survival.

Jesinia is also deeply loyal. She helps Violet even when doing so could cost her position, her future, or her safety. At first, her rebellion takes small forms, such as not recording certain book requests. Over time, those small acts grow into much larger risks, including helping with restricted research and eventually joining the Revolution.

Her personality is shaped by discipline and restraint, but also by curiosity. Jesinia wants to understand the truth, not simply repeat the version of history that Basgiath allows. This makes her especially important in a world where the Scribe Quadrant is supposed to preserve knowledge but has also become part of a system built on omission and control.

Jesinia also plans for the future. Violet describes her as someone suited to long-term relationships, and her academic path shows the same quality: she is patient, focused, and capable of committing to difficult goals. Her eventual future as Curator fits this side of her character, because she becomes someone who preserves truth not for one moment, but for history.

Abilities

Linguist

Jesinia is gifted with languages, translation, and textual analysis. Her work as a scribe requires precision, memory, and the ability to understand difficult texts. She is connected to several languages and forms of communication, including:

  • Sign language
  • Common tongue
  • Old Lucerish
  • Morrainian

Her later role as translator of the rebellion’s accounts shows that her language skills become historically important, not just academically impressive.

Archive Research

Jesinia is highly skilled at finding, handling, and interpreting texts in the Archives. She helps riders and professors access the scrolls and books they need, but her true value becomes clear when she helps Violet search for information the official records try to hide.

Record Keeping

As a scribe, Jesinia understands how records are created, tracked, and used. This knowledge allows her to protect Violet by leaving certain requests off the record. It also gives her insight into how Navarre controls knowledge through documentation.

Translation

Jesinia’s translation skills become crucial to preserving the truth of the rebellion. After the events of the series, she translates the accounts from older language forms into the modern tongue, ensuring that the events are recorded accurately for future generations.

Information Work

Jesinia’s work is not physical combat, but it is still dangerous. She helps expose lies, supports research into the wards and venin, and later helps build a printing press in Aretia. Her abilities make her part of the Revolution’s information network.

Relationships

Violet SorrengailViolet and Jesinia are close friends who have known each other for years. The year before Conscription Day, they studied together for the Scribe Quadrant entrance exam, and Jesinia credits that time with helping her succeed. Jesinia helps Violet access books, avoids recording dangerous requests, and eventually becomes one of her key allies in uncovering the truth.
Sawyer HenrickSawyer Henrick becomes Jesinia’s main romantic interest. Their connection begins when Sawyer accompanies Violet to the Archives and starts interacting with Jesinia. He learns sign language so he can communicate with her directly, showing genuine care and effort. Their relationship continues to develop through Onyx Storm, where Sawyer relies on Jesinia emotionally after losing his leg and struggling with his return to riding.
Liam MairiJesinia meets Liam when he joins Violet during Archive duty in Fourth Wing. Violet is surprised to learn that Liam can sign, and Liam openly flirts with Jesinia. Violet warns him off because Jesinia is someone who prefers long-term relationships rather than casual flirtation. Although their connection does not become romantic, they remain friendly until Liam’s death.
