Biography
Berwyn is a powerful venin Sage and general, known by several titles and aliases, including The Sage, Dark Wielder, and General. His early life is unknown, but by the events of Fourth Wing, he has already become one of the most dangerous venin encountered by Violet Sorrengail, Xaden Riorson, and their allies.
Berwyn first appears during the Battle of Resson, where he climbs the clock tower in search of the lure rune. When Tairn incinerates the tower, Berwyn survives the destruction, demonstrating the terrifying resilience of high-ranking venin and establishing him as a threat far beyond ordinary enemies.
Across the series, Berwyn becomes closely tied to Xaden Riorson’s storyline. He takes a particular interest in Xaden and repeatedly attempts to draw him toward the venin, wanting him as an initiate. His role becomes especially important when Xaden is turned venin, making Berwyn one of the figures most directly connected to Xaden’s struggle with power, control, and survival.
In Iron Flame, Berwyn confronts Xaden and shows how quickly venin can adapt in battle. He counters attacks, anticipates movements, and pressures Xaden toward a choice rather than simply trying to kill him outright. This makes him dangerous not only because of his raw power, but because he understands how to manipulate opponents psychologically.
In Onyx Storm, Berwyn’s influence expands further through the reveal of his signet: dreamwalking. This ability allows him to enter and manipulate dreams, making him capable of reaching targets in one of their most vulnerable states. His dreamwalking gives him access to fear, memory, and psychological pressure in ways that make him especially dangerous to those already struggling with trauma, power, or guilt.
Berwyn remains alive by the end of the known events and continues to represent one of the central venin threats in the series. His survival, power, and connection to Xaden make him one of the most important antagonistic figures in the conflict against the venin.

Personality
Berwyn is calm, calculating, and deeply manipulative. He does not rely only on force, but often pressures his enemies by reading their reactions, adapting to their choices, and offering them a way forward that serves his own goals.
His interactions with Xaden show a mentor-like cruelty. Berwyn does not treat Xaden simply as an enemy to destroy; he sees him as someone who can be shaped, recruited, and used. This makes his presence especially dangerous, because his threat is psychological as much as physical.
Berwyn’s confidence comes from both his rank and his power. As a Sage and general, he is used to being obeyed, feared, and survived rather than defeated. His ability to withstand dragonfire, adapt in combat, and invade dreams makes him one of the most unsettling venin in the series.
Powers
Veninism
As a venin, Berwyn channels power directly from the source rather than through a dragon or gryphon. His rank as a Sage places him among the most powerful venin, equivalent to a general, and gives him access to destructive abilities far beyond ordinary magic users.
Blue Fire Wielding
Berwyn can wield a unique form of fire that is different from ordinary rider fire signets. His blue flames can be thrown like daggers, making them a dangerous ranged weapon in combat.
Pain Projection
Berwyn can force power into an enemy’s body to inflict overwhelming pain. This ability makes him especially dangerous during direct confrontations, because he can incapacitate opponents without needing to rely only on physical attacks.
Gravity Manipulation
Using his staff or by raising his hand, Berwyn can manipulate force and movement around his opponents. He can lift enemies from the ground, slam them down, force them to their knees, or knock objects out of the air.
Shields
Berwyn can create protective shields of power, allowing him to defend himself against attacks and maintain control during battle.
Distance Wielding
Berwyn is also associated with distance wielding, allowing him to disappear from one location and reappear in another. This makes him difficult to trap and gives him a major advantage when appearing, retreating, or repositioning during conflict.
Signet
Dreamwalking: Revealed in Onyx Storm, Berwyn’s signet allows him to enter and manipulate dreams. Through dreamwalking, he can reach targets psychologically, gather information, influence perception, and use fear or desire against them.
Abilities
Fighting Adaptation
Like other venin, Berwyn can quickly adapt to an opponent’s fighting style. This makes him difficult to overwhelm through repeated tactics, because he learns how an enemy strikes, blocks, dodges, and reacts.
Resistance to Dragonfire
High-ranking venin are not easily killed by ordinary dragonfire, and Berwyn survives Tairn’s destruction of the clock tower at Resson. Andarna’s unique fire is different and can weaken venin immunity, but Berwyn’s exact level of resistance to her fire has not been fully confirmed.
Relationships
| Xaden Riorson | Berwyn takes a particular interest in Xaden Riorson and wants him as an initiate. Their relationship is defined by manipulation, power, and Berwyn’s attempts to pull Xaden deeper into the venin. After Xaden is turned, Berwyn’s influence becomes one of the central threats surrounding his future. |
|---|---|
| Violet Sorrengail | Violet is one of the main people resisting the venin threat, making her an enemy of Berwyn and his kind. Through his connection to Xaden and his ability to manipulate dreams, Berwyn also becomes part of the psychological danger surrounding Violet and the people closest to her. |
| Theophanie | Theophanie and Berwyn are both powerful venin figures. Their connection is shaped less by loyalty than by the larger venin hierarchy, competition, and the desire to gain influence through powerful initiates. |
