Biography

General Augustine Melgren is the Commanding General of Navarre and one of the most powerful military figures in the Empyrean series. Bonded to the black dragon Codagh, he holds enormous influence over Basgiath, the riders, and Navarre’s war strategy. His signet, battle foresight, allows him to see the outcomes of battles before they happen, making him both feared and politically valuable.

Melgren’s power extends far beyond rank. Because he can anticipate battle outcomes, he has long shaped military decisions in Navarre, and his authority carries enough weight to influence both battlefield planning and political negotiations. At the same time, his foresight is not absolute, and one of the most important limitations on his power becomes central to the rebellion storyline.

Before the Events of Fourth Wing

Melgren plays a major role in the aftermath of Tyrrendor’s failed rebellion. Under his command, Codagh executes the rebellion leaders with dragonfire. Unknown to Melgren, runes had been given to the leaders’ children for protection. Those runes were specifically designed to counteract the signet of the rider responsible for their parents’ deaths, which ultimately resulted in the rebellion relics carried by the marked ones.

This detail becomes one of the most important hidden consequences of Melgren’s actions. Because of the way the relics were formed, his signet does not function properly in battles involving three or more marked ones. That limitation creates a lasting blind spot in Navarre’s military leadership and becomes something Xaden Riorson and the other marked riders deliberately use to their advantage.

Fourth Wing

In Fourth Wing, Melgren is introduced as a looming military authority whose word carries enormous force. He is present at Basgiath during key moments and officially recognizes Violet Sorrengail’s bond with two dragons, declaring it valid under dragon law. That decision is significant because even Melgren cannot challenge what the dragons themselves have allowed.

His presence during Reunification Day also reinforces his connection to the state’s version of rebellion history. Melgren is one of the figures most closely tied to Navarre’s official power structure, and he represents the hard, militarized side of the kingdom’s leadership.

Iron Flame

In Iron Flame, Melgren’s signet becomes even more relevant. He foresees a devastating battle at Samara and pushes the Navarrian military to prepare for it. His ability to see battle outcomes makes him a strategic asset, but it also encourages the leadership around him to rely heavily on his visions.

When Basgiath comes under attack, Melgren returns to help defend the college. After the battle, he is involved in the negotiations that follow, including the uneasy effort to work with the riders of the revolution. His role in these moments shows that he is not just a battlefield commander but also a political enforcer for Navarre’s military interests.

Onyx Storm

In Onyx Storm, Melgren remains deeply involved in decision-making at Basgiath after the venin attack and the shifting alliances that follow. He is part of the negotiations surrounding Violet, Andarna, and the effort to find the seventh dragon breed. During these discussions, he makes it clear that military control matters more to him than personal preference or cadet rank.

Melgren shuts down Violet’s attempt to choose her own team for the mission and instead insists that Captain Grady will lead the task force. He treats the assignment as a nonnegotiable military operation, not something Violet or Andarna can shape freely. Even when Violet pushes back, Melgren remains rigid, emotionless, and focused on command structure.

His attitude during these negotiations highlights exactly who he is: a man who values order, hierarchy, and control above comfort or diplomacy. He is willing to bargain when necessary, but he does so from a position of authority and never lets anyone forget it.

Personality

Melgren is usually portrayed as cold, calculating, and severe. He carries the kind of authority that makes other people adjust themselves the moment he enters a room. He rarely wastes words, and when he does speak, it is often with the expectation that he will be obeyed.

He is also deeply pragmatic. Melgren does not seem especially interested in sentiment, and he is willing to interrogate, execute, or pressure others when he believes the survival of Navarre demands it. Even when he compromises, he does so strategically rather than warmly.

At the same time, Melgren is not careless. His decisions are often grounded in strategy, and much of his ruthlessness comes from the belief that weakness, hesitation, or disorder will cost lives. That does not make him compassionate, but it does make him more complex than a simple authoritarian figure.

Physical Description

General Melgren is described as having beady, calculating eyes and a sharp, hawkish nose. His expression and posture give him a severe presence, and he seems to wear anger as naturally as part of his uniform.

He is not described in especially decorative terms, but that fits his character. Melgren’s intimidation comes less from physical ornament and more from the force of his authority, his dragon bond, and the sense that he is always evaluating the people around him.

Powers

Lesser Magic

As with all riders, Melgren can use lesser magic once his dragon channels through him. This allows him to open doors without touching them, move with enhanced speed, manipulate mage lights, power ink pens, and work with runes.

Signet

Battle Foresight: Melgren’s signet allows him to foresee the outcomes of battles before they occur. However, he cannot determine exactly when those battles will take place. His foresight also fails in battles that involve three or more riders with rebellion relics, because the relics were created in a way that interferes with his power.

This limitation is one of the most important strategic weaknesses in Navarre’s military system. While Melgren remains extraordinarily dangerous, his visions are not as complete as the kingdom once believed.

Dragon

Codagh

Codagh is Melgren’s black swordtail dragon and one of the most formidable dragons in the series. He is described as the largest and most powerful black dragon, and his sheer presence reinforces Melgren’s standing within Navarre’s military hierarchy.

Codagh also plays an important role in the history of the marked ones. By carrying out the executions of the rebellion leaders with dragonfire, he becomes directly connected to the chain of events that leads to the creation of the rebellion relics. Like other dragons, he keeps certain truths from his rider, including knowledge that dragons are not free to share openly.

His bond with Melgren is one of power and command, but it is still limited by dragon secrecy. That tension matters because even one of Navarre’s highest generals does not fully control the knowledge his dragon holds.
