Biography
Early Life
Sawyer Henrick is from Luceras, a settlement along Navarre’s cold northern coast. Before becoming part of Violet Sorrengail’s squad, he entered the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College and attempted to bond a dragon during Threshing.
Unlike most cadets, Sawyer did not bond during his first year. Instead of being killed or removed from the quadrant, he was allowed to repeat the year. He kept this failure from his family and let them believe that riders simply could not write home during their first two years at Basgiath.
This early failure shapes Sawyer’s character. He is not careless or arrogant when Violet meets him. He knows what it feels like to fall short in a place that rarely gives second chances, which makes his later success as a rider more meaningful.
Fourth Wing
In Fourth Wing, Sawyer is repeating his first year in the Riders Quadrant. He is assigned to Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing, alongside Violet Sorrengail, Rhiannon Matthias, Ridoc Gamlyn, and the other cadets in their squad.
Because Sawyer has already survived one year at Basgiath, he carries himself with more confidence than many first-years. He and Rhiannon quickly make a practical agreement with Violet: they will help her with hand-to-hand combat if she helps them with history. This exchange becomes one of the first steps toward the close friendship that later defines Violet’s core group.
Sawyer proves himself physically capable early on. He completes the Gauntlet with ease and shows the strength, balance, and endurance expected of a rider. During Threshing, he successfully bonds Sliseag, a red Swordtail dragon, securing his place in the Riders Quadrant after failing to bond the year before.
After Threshing, Sawyer becomes part of the smaller group of surviving first-years in Violet’s squad. Alongside Violet, Rhiannon, and Ridoc, he forms one of the most important friendships in the series. He is not as loud as Ridoc or as commanding as Rhiannon, but he is steady, observant, and reliable.
Sawyer’s role in Fourth Wing is often quieter than some of the others, but that steadiness matters. He supports the squad, grows into his bond with Sliseag, and becomes one of the people Violet can count on as Basgiath becomes increasingly dangerous.
Iron Flame
In Iron Flame, Sawyer returns as a second-year rider and becomes even more important within the squad. When Rhiannon Matthias is chosen as Squad Leader, she selects Sawyer as her Executive Officer. This choice reflects his competence, calm nature, and reliability under pressure.
Sawyer remains part of Violet’s closest circle as the truth about venin, wyvern, and Navarre’s lies begins to spread. Like Ridoc and Rhiannon, he has to adjust to the fact that much of what they were taught was controlled or false. Still, he remains loyal to Violet and the group.
His signet also becomes a valuable asset. Sawyer is a metallurgist, meaning he can manipulate metal. This ability is useful in both combat and practical situations, especially as the rebellion begins working with weapons, wards, and the physical structures needed to survive against venin attacks.
Sawyer’s relationship with Jesinia Neilwart also develops more clearly in Iron Flame. He begins learning sign language from Violet so he can communicate with Jesinia more easily. This detail shows his patient, thoughtful side. He does not treat the language as a novelty or a joke; he learns because he wants to make a real effort.
During the Battle of Basgiath, Sawyer suffers one of the most devastating injuries in the series. While fighting to protect Sliseag, he loses his leg below the knee to a wyvern bite. The injury changes his life and his future as a rider, but it does not end his place in the story.
By the end of Iron Flame, Sawyer has gone from a repeated first-year cadet to a proven rider, Executive Officer, loyal friend, and survivor of one of the most brutal battles Basgiath has seen.
Onyx Storm
In Onyx Storm, Sawyer’s arc focuses heavily on recovery, adaptation, and identity after losing his leg. His injury is not treated as something he simply moves past. He has to rebuild his strength, adjust to his prosthetic, and figure out what it means to remain a rider after such a life-changing loss.
Violet becomes especially important during this period. Because she understands what it means to live with physical limitations in a brutal rider culture, she is able to support Sawyer in a way others cannot. She does not pity him; she pushes him, believes in him, and helps him find a way back to the sky.
Ridoc also remains close to Sawyer after the injury. Their friendship becomes more grounded in Onyx Storm, showing that the squad’s bond is not only built on jokes and shared danger, but also on staying with each other when survival becomes complicated.
Sawyer eventually learns to fly again with Sliseag, proving that his injury has changed him but not taken away who he is. His recovery makes him one of the clearest examples of resilience in the Empyrean series. He is not the loudest member of Violet’s group, but his determination, loyalty, and quiet strength make him essential.
Physical Description
Sawyer is described as tall, lean, and wiry. He has a light complexion, brown hair, and many freckles, including freckles along his jaw. Violet also notes that his brown stubble does not fully cover them.
His build reflects the demands of rider training. Sawyer is not described as bulky, but he is athletic, strong, and physically capable. He completes the Gauntlet with ease, showing that his lean frame does not make him weak.
During the Battle of Basgiath in Iron Flame, Sawyer loses his leg below the knee to a wyvern bite while protecting Sliseag. Afterward, he uses a prosthetic leg and has to relearn how to move, fight, mount, and fly as a rider.
This becomes an important part of his physical arc in Onyx Storm. Sawyer’s body changes, but he adapts. His strength is no longer only about what he could do before the injury, but about how he learns to keep going afterward.
Personality
Sawyer is calm, steady, and intelligent. Because he is repeating his first year when Violet meets him, he has more experience than most cadets around him. He understands the dangers of the Riders Quadrant and does not need to prove himself through reckless arrogance.
He is also level-headed. Sawyer does not lash out easily, even when insulted or underestimated. This makes him a stabilizing presence in the squad, especially beside louder personalities like Ridoc and stronger leaders like Rhiannon.
Sawyer’s reliability is one of his defining traits. Rhiannon choosing him as Executive Officer shows that she trusts his judgment, discipline, and ability to support the squad. He may not always be the center of attention, but he is someone others can depend on.
His gentler side comes through most clearly in his relationship with Jesinia. Learning sign language for her shows effort, patience, and emotional sincerity. Sawyer does not only admire Jesinia from a distance; he takes steps to meet her in her world.
After losing his leg, Sawyer’s resilience becomes a central part of his character. He struggles, adapts, and eventually finds a way back to riding. His arc is not about pretending nothing changed. It is about proving that change does not erase his worth, skill, or identity as a rider.
Powers
Lesser Magic
Like all bonded riders, Sawyer can channel lesser magic through his bond with Sliseag. This allows him to perform basic magical abilities such as unlocking doors without touching them, moving with preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, powering ink pens, and placing runes.
Metallurgy
Sawyer’s signet is metallurgy, or metal wielding. This allows him to manipulate metal, making his power useful for combat, weapons, repairs, and practical battlefield problem-solving.
While metallurgy is not as flashy as lightning or storm wielding, it is extremely valuable in a war built around weapons, wards, alloy, and dragon-rider combat. Sawyer’s signet gives him the ability to affect materials that matter directly to survival.
His power also fits his character. Sawyer is practical, steady, and quietly useful. His signet reflects that same energy: not loud, but essential when the situation requires precision and control.
Abilities
Combat and Rider Training
Sawyer is a capable fighter and rider. Even before bonding Sliseag, he has enough experience from his repeated first year to help Violet with hand-to-hand combat. He is athletic, controlled, and physically prepared for the demands of the Riders Quadrant.
He completes the Gauntlet with ease and later becomes a dependable member of Iron Squad. His combat value is not only in brute force, but in his ability to stay calm and work well with others under pressure.
Leadership
Rhiannon chooses Sawyer as Executive Officer of Iron Squad because she trusts his competence and reliability. Sawyer is not the loudest leader, but he is steady and practical, which makes him a strong support figure within the squad.
Sign Language
Sawyer begins learning sign language from Violet so he can communicate with Jesinia Neilwart. This becomes one of the sweetest details of his character, showing that he is willing to put in quiet effort for someone he cares about.
Adaptation After Injury
After losing his leg, Sawyer has to relearn parts of daily life, training, and riding. His recovery in Onyx Storm shows determination and adaptability. With support from Violet and his squad, he works toward flying again with Sliseag.
Relationships
| Violet Sorrengail | Sawyer and Violet become close friends during their first year together at Basgiath. Their friendship begins with a practical exchange: Sawyer and Rhiannon help Violet with hand-to-hand combat while Violet helps them with history. Over time, Sawyer becomes part of Violet’s trusted inner circle. In Onyx Storm, Violet supports him through recovery after losing his leg, helping him adapt and find a way back to flying with Sliseag. |
|---|---|
| Rhiannon Matthias | Sawyer and Rhiannon are close friends and squadmates. After Threshing, they briefly sleep together while celebrating bonding with their dragons, but their relationship remains rooted in friendship and trust. In Iron Flame, Rhiannon chooses Sawyer as her Executive Officer because she values his competence, reliability, and calm judgment. |
| Ridoc Gamlyn | Sawyer and Ridoc are close friends and later roommates at Riorson House. Their friendship is full of teasing, but it also becomes emotionally important after Sawyer loses his leg. Ridoc stays close, supports him, and helps remind Sawyer that he is still part of the squad and still a rider. |
| Jesinia Neilwart | Sawyer develops a mutual romantic interest with Jesinia Neilwart. Their relationship grows gradually and quietly, marked by sweetness rather than drama. Sawyer begins learning sign language from Violet so he can communicate with Jesinia more easily, showing how seriously he values their connection. |
Dragon
Sliseag
Sawyer is bonded to Sliseag, a red Swordtail dragon. Through Sliseag, Sawyer channels lesser magic and manifests his signet of metallurgy. Their bond is especially meaningful because Sawyer failed to bond a dragon during his first year and had to repeat the Riders Quadrant before finally becoming a rider.
Sliseag plays a major role in Sawyer’s arc during Iron Flame. During the Battle of Basgiath, Sawyer risks himself to protect her and loses his leg below the knee to a wyvern bite. In Onyx Storm, his recovery is closely tied to his determination to fly with Sliseag again.
Together, Sawyer and Sliseag represent persistence after failure and survival after injury. Their bond is not only about power; it is about Sawyer’s refusal to stop being a rider, even when the cost of war changes his life permanently.
