Biography

Fourth Wing

Ridoc Gamlyn enters Fourth Wing as a first-year rider in the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College. He is assigned to Second Squad, Flame Section, Fourth Wing, alongside Violet Sorrengail, Rhiannon Matthias, Sawyer Henrick, and the rest of their squad. Violet learns his name quickly because Ridoc makes himself impossible to ignore: he jokes constantly, talks back in class, and uses humor to cut through the fear and brutality of Basgiath.

At first, Ridoc appears to be the squad’s comic relief. He is sarcastic, loud, quick with inappropriate comments, and rarely misses a chance to make a joke. But beneath that humor is real loyalty. During Gauntlet training, he loses his temper when Tynan insults Violet and calls her a liability. It is one of the first moments where Ridoc’s jokes drop away and his protective side becomes clear.

Ridoc survives the early brutality of the Riders Quadrant and proves himself during Presentation and Threshing. After Threshing, he bonds Aotrom, a brown Swordtail dragon. Alongside Violet, Rhiannon, and Sawyer, Ridoc becomes one of the few surviving first-years in their squad, strengthening the bond between the four of them.

As the year continues, Ridoc becomes one of Violet’s closest friends. He celebrates her victories, defends her when others underestimate her, and supports her through dangerous challenges. When Jack Barlowe challenges Violet on the mat, Liam tells Ridoc to guard her while he runs to get Xaden. Ridoc takes that seriously, staying close and trying to help when Jack’s power turns the fight deadly.

Ridoc’s signet manifests before Violet’s. He becomes an ice wielder, able to summon and manipulate ice. While the ability is considered more common than some other signets, Ridoc proves that it can be extremely useful, especially when combined with quick thinking and battlefield awareness.

By the end of Fourth Wing, Ridoc is more than the funny squadmate. He is a survivor, a loyal friend, and a rider who has already proven that his humor does not make him careless. He uses jokes to survive, but when his friends are in danger, he acts.

Iron Flame

In Iron Flame, Ridoc returns as a second-year rider and becomes an even more important part of Violet’s inner circle. He remains sarcastic and irreverent, but the stakes around him grow much darker. The Riders Quadrant becomes more dangerous, Rider Survival Course pushes the squad harder, and the truth about venin and Navarre’s lies begins to fracture everything they thought they knew.

Ridoc’s loyalty to Violet, Rhiannon, and Sawyer becomes one of his defining traits. When Violet finally tells them the truth about venin, Ridoc is hurt that she kept the secret from them, but he does not abandon her. Instead, he reaffirms the bond between the four of them. Their promise to survive until graduation becomes one of the emotional anchors of the group.

Ridoc also proves surprisingly useful outside combat. During discussions about the Archives and the journals of the First Six, he remembers information from the Squad Battle search in General Sorrengail’s office. His knowledge helps push the group toward the vaults and the journals needed to understand the wards. Moments like this show that Ridoc pays attention, even when he acts like he is just there for the jokes.

During Rider Survival Course, Ridoc’s fear of snakes gives his usually joking personality a more vulnerable edge. But the course also shows how fiercely he cares for his friends: when Violet is hurt during interrogation training, he reacts immediately, struggling against his restraints and calling out for her.

After the truth about venin is exposed, Ridoc leaves Basgiath with Violet’s squad and joins the Revolution in Aretia. There, he continues to function as both a morale boost and a practical member of the group. He jokes about danger, complains when situations are absurd, and still steps forward when something has to be done.

One of Ridoc’s most important moments comes during the mission over the Cliffs of Dralor. Because he is one of the best climbers in the group, Violet relies on him to help the others cross a dangerous gap. When the group is attacked, Ridoc is shot and badly injured. Violet refuses to leave him behind, reminding him of their promise that all four of them will live to see graduation.

Ridoc also plays a crucial role during the Battle of Basgiath. When Baide attacks in the wardstone chamber, Ridoc uses his ice wielding to create a wall of ice and protect the others from dragonfire. The act badly burns his hands, but it saves lives. Later in the battle, he and Aotrom fight in the sky, and the attempt to save them leads to Sawyer losing his leg. By the end of Iron Flame, Ridoc has survived again, but the cost of war has become impossible to joke away completely.

Onyx Storm

In Onyx Storm, Ridoc continues to grow as part of Violet’s trusted circle and the Revolution. His humor remains one of his most recognizable traits, but his role is no longer limited to lightening the mood. He becomes a steady presence in a group under constant pressure, helping keep morale intact while still contributing in dangerous situations.

Ridoc’s friendship with Sawyer becomes especially important after Sawyer loses his leg. As Sawyer adjusts to a life-changing injury, Ridoc stays close to him and supports him through the aftermath. Their friendship shows Ridoc’s more grounded side: he may joke constantly, but he does not disappear when things become painful or difficult.

His bond with Violet also deepens. Ridoc is one of the people Violet can trust without hesitation. He does not treat her like a symbol or a weapon; he treats her like a friend. That makes him valuable not only in battle, but emotionally. Ridoc’s loyalty is direct, simple, and consistent.

Across the Empyrean series, Ridoc grows from a sarcastic first-year into a dependable rider and rebel. He never loses his sharp humor, but the books gradually reveal that humor as part of his strength. Ridoc survives fear, grief, injury, and war by staying himself — and by refusing to let his friends face danger alone.

Physical Description

Ridoc is shorter than many riders, but still solidly built. His size is mentioned in comparison to other cadets: he is smaller than some of the larger riders, but still broad and strong enough to be physically intimidating when he wants to be.

He has dark brown hair and brown skin. During his second year, he styles his hair into spikes, though it is later singed and flattened during Solas’s attack on the formations. His eye color is not specified in canon.

After bonding Aotrom, Ridoc bears a brown dragon relic on his upper arm. In Iron Flame, he also gets a tattoo of Aotrom. The tattoo begins near the base of his collar and wraps down toward his shoulder, connecting visually with his dragon relic.

Ridoc usually wears standard rider leathers and practical gear suited for training, flight, and combat. Like the rest of Violet’s squad, his appearance changes as Basgiath hardens him: he gains more muscle, becomes less lean, and carries himself more like a rider as the series continues.

Personality

Ridoc is sarcastic, playful, and openly inappropriate in a way that makes him stand out even at Basgiath. He uses humor constantly, whether he is in class, in formation, on a mission, or facing danger. His jokes often act as a pressure valve for the squad, giving everyone a moment of relief in situations that would otherwise feel unbearable.

But Ridoc is not just comic relief. He is deeply loyal to his friends and becomes serious when someone threatens them. His anger at Tynan during Gauntlet training shows that he will not let his squadmates be mocked or dismissed. His reaction when Violet is hurt during interrogation training also reveals how protective he truly is.

Ridoc is emotionally direct in a way that contrasts with some of the more guarded characters around him. He admits when he is scared, complains when things are absurd, and says what others are often thinking but will not say out loud. This makes him funny, but it also makes him honest.

His humor does not erase his fear. Ridoc is afraid of snakes, gets nervous before deadly situations, and is open about being terrified in battle. What makes him brave is not fearlessness, but the fact that he keeps showing up anyway. He jokes, swears, panics a little, and still fights.

Across the series, Ridoc becomes one of the emotional stabilizers of Violet’s group. He lightens the mood, but he also holds the group together through loyalty, consistency, and friendship. He is the kind of person who makes war feel survivable for the people around him.

Powers

Lesser Magic

Through his bond with Aotrom, Ridoc can channel lesser magic. Like other bonded riders, this allows him to perform standard magical abilities such as unlocking doors without touching them, moving with preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, powering ink pens, and placing runes.

Ice Wielding

Ridoc’s signet is ice wielding. He can summon, shape, and manipulate ice, making him useful in both defensive and offensive situations. His signet first appears in Fourth Wing and becomes increasingly important as the series continues.

Ridoc’s ice wielding is more versatile than it first appears. He can freeze water, pull moisture from the air, and create ice barriers. During the Battle of Basgiath, he uses his signet to form a wall of ice against dragonfire, protecting the others in the wardstone chamber despite suffering severe burns to his hands.

His signet also has practical uses outside direct combat. His ice becomes useful for injuries, obstacles, and quick tactical solutions. Ridoc often treats his power casually, but in the right moment, it can be lifesaving.

Abilities

Combat and Weapons

Ridoc is a capable rider and fighter, even though he often hides his competence behind jokes. He survives Assessment Day, Gauntlet training, Threshing, Rider Survival Course, and multiple major battles. His preferred weapon is the bow, giving him value in ranged combat.

He also proves himself in close, chaotic situations. He can move quickly, react under pressure, and defend others when needed. His smaller size compared to some riders does not make him weak; it often makes him quicker and more adaptable.

Climbing and Physical Skill

Ridoc is one of the best climbers in the group. During the climb at the Cliffs of Dralor, Violet relies on him to reach a higher point and create a handhold for smaller riders and fliers. This skill becomes crucial when the terrain itself turns deadly.

Land Navigation

Ridoc shows a strong understanding of land navigation during Rider Survival Course. He jokes about being a “land navigation god,” but the squad does rely on him for help. This is another example of Ridoc being more capable than his unserious attitude suggests.

Languages

Ridoc speaks the common language of Navarre and is semi-fluent in sign language. He knows enough to communicate, though not enough to be considered a reliable teacher.

Relationships

Violet SorrengailRidoc becomes one of Violet’s closest friends during their first year at Basgiath. He defends her during Gauntlet training, celebrates her successes, supports her during dangerous challenges, and remains loyal after learning the truth about venin. Their friendship is built on trust, teasing, and survival. By Iron Flame and Onyx Storm, Ridoc is one of the people Violet can rely on completely.
Rhiannon MatthiasRidoc and Rhiannon are close squadmates and part of Violet’s core friend group. Rhiannon often reins him in when his jokes go too far, but their bond is strong. Along with Violet and Sawyer, they form the emotional center of the squad and promise to survive until graduation together.
Sawyer HenrickSawyer is one of Ridoc’s closest friends and later his roommate at Riorson House. Their relationship is full of teasing, jokes, and loyalty. After Sawyer loses his leg, Ridoc stays by him and supports him as he adjusts, showing that his friendship is steady even when things become painful.
Tyvon VarenRidoc has a brief fling with Tyvon Varen, a fellow rider at Basgiath. The relationship is casual, and Ridoc makes it clear that fraternizing with command is frowned upon rather than forbidden. No long-term romance is confirmed for Ridoc in canon.
AotromAotrom is Ridoc’s bonded dragon. Their bond gives Ridoc access to lesser magic and his ice-wielding signet. Aotrom is a brown Swordtail and shares some of Ridoc’s playful energy, making their rider-dragon bond feel especially well matched.

Dragon

Aotrom

Ridoc is bonded to Aotrom, a brown Swordtail dragon. Through Aotrom, Ridoc channels lesser magic and manifests his signet of ice-wielding. Aotrom is relatively young compared to some of the larger, older dragons in the series, but he is still a powerful bonded dragon.

Aotrom and Ridoc share a playful dynamic. Their bond reflects Ridoc’s personality: loyal, mischievous, and more capable than it first appears. Together, they survive major battles, including the Battle of Basgiath, where Aotrom fights in the sky while Ridoc uses his signet to protect others on the ground.
