A Court of Mist and Fury

Feyre first encounters the water-wraiths during the Spring Court’s Tithe, where one approaches Tamlin to beg for mercy. Their lake has run out of fish, leaving her and her sisters starving—water-wraiths are creatures that must constantly feed. Tamlin refuses her plea and gives her three days to find payment.

Moved by the wraith’s desperation and reminded of her own past hunger, Feyre secretly offers the wraith her jewelry to use as payment. Grateful, the wraith vows that she and her sisters are now indebted to Feyre.

Later, when Feyre and Amren nearly drown while retrieving half of the Book of Breathings from a submerged Summer Court temple, they are saved by a group of water-wraiths. The creatures tell Feyre their debt has been repaid.

Appearance

Water-wraiths are slender, gray-skinned aquatic faeries with an eerie, almost spectral appearance. They wear no clothing, and their long, dark hair hangs limply over their chests. Their faces are sharply angled, dominated by large, completely black eyes, while their iridescent skin catches the light whenever they move.

They possess jagged, pike-like teeth, webbed fingers with sharp nails, and webbed, clawed feet, all adapted for life in the water. Their noses are reduced to simple slits, and delicate gills open and close beneath their ears. Their skin is consistently cold and clammy, further emphasizing their otherworldly nature.
