Location
Velaris, known as the City of Starlight and the Court of Dreams, is a hidden city located on the western side of the Night Court in Prythian. It lies along the Sidra River and is protected by powerful wards that keep its existence concealed from the rest of the world.
Description
Velaris is built across a series of steep, rolling hills bordered by the deep-blue Sidra River, which winds through the city and out to the sea. Ships with fixed sails line the river, keeping it navigable throughout the year. At the northern edge of Velaris stands a wall of flat-topped red mountains, with their central and tallest peak carved into the upper levels of the rock to house the House of Wind. Beyond these rise sharper, jagged mountains that form a natural barrier around the city.
The architecture of Velaris includes white marble, warm sandstone, and the same red stone found in the mountains to the north. Many neighborhoods feature rows of townhouses with green copper roofs and white chimneys. Throughout the city are cafés, restaurants, and nightclubs such as Rita’s, many of them warmed by spells during colder months.
Velaris contains four market squares known as Palaces—two on each side of the Sidra. These include the Palace of Thread and Jewels and the Palace of Bone and Salt on the southern bank, and the Palace of Hoof and Leaf on the northern bank. Each square is paved in white stone and framed by Tehran pillars supporting carved, painted buildings with covered walkways beneath their shopfronts.
The city’s most renowned district is the Rainbow of Velaris, its artists’ quarter, located on a hill that slopes directly to the river. This area is filled with brightly painted buildings, housing galleries, supply shops, potters’ workshops, sculpture gardens, and creative studios. It also contains one of Velaris’s five major theaters, marked by a golden dome, as well as additional small theaters and an amphitheater overlooking the sea.
Relevance
Velaris remains hidden from the rest of Prythian due to the spells and wards placed on it by ancient High Lords and later strengthened by Rhysand. Its protection was preserved during Amarantha’s reign when Rhysand erased the city from the memories of the Court of Nightmares and shielded it with the last of his power before being taken Under the Mountain. These protections ensured that Velaris stayed untouched for fifty years.
Historically, the Night Court was once ruled entirely from the Hewn City. An ancient High Lord shifted the court’s structure by sealing the borders, removing its most dangerous courtiers, and creating Velaris as a secure home for trade, culture, and peace. Its secrecy was maintained through binding spells placed on the river and stones of the city and through enchantments that prevent outsiders from revealing its existence.
During A Court of Mist and Fury, Feyre is brought to Velaris after leaving the Spring Court and swearing secrecy. Rhysand introduces her to the House of Wind and the town house, where his Inner Circle lives and gathers. The city becomes the central base from which Feyre, Rhysand, and the Inner Circle work to counter Hybern.
To gain the Mortal Queens’ trust, Rhysand reveals Velaris using the Veritas. The Queens later betray him, allowing Hybern to send forces that attack the city. Velaris withstands the assault with the defense of the Inner Circle, though parts of the city— including the Rainbow —are damaged. During the Cauldron mission, Amren stays behind to guard Velaris from further attack.
In A Court of Wings and Ruin, Nesta and Elain are brought to Velaris after being Made into High Fae. When Feyre returns from the Spring Court with Lucien, she reunites with her sisters in the city as preparations for war continue.
