Location
The River House is located in Velaris, in the Night Court. It sits directly on the banks of the Sidra River, overlooking the water and the hills beyond. The home was built by Rhysand and Feyre as their primary residence, designed to support their growing family and serve as a gathering place for the Inner Circle.
Description
The River House is a large, elegant manor that still feels warm and welcoming. It contains numerous rooms for the Inner Circle and their families, along with a sitting room filled with books, comfortable chairs, and a hearth. Feyre is implied to have added a personal art studio, a garden for Elain, a library for Amren, an office, a training space for Illyrians, and a master suite with a spacious bathing pool and a nursery. Members of the Inner Circle are able to winnow directly inside the home.
The entry features a tall marble archway that opens into a grand foyer with sweeping staircases. The space is decorated in soft ivory and sand tones, with pale wooden floors, blue rugs, handmade furniture, and a chandelier crafted by Velaris artisans. Large windows offer views of the lawn and the Sidra River.
Throughout the house hang many of Feyre’s paintings—landscapes, moments from their history, and portraits of the Inner Circle. A portrait of Nesta holding the line at the Pass of Enalius hangs in the main hall.
The sitting room is protected against eavesdropping and opens into a garden courtyard. It has a black marble hearth, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, wood-paneled walls, and sapphire velvet furniture.
Rhysand’s study spans two levels and is lit by green glass lamps and an iron chandelier. The lower level holds his desk, a portrait of Feyre, long work tables, and shelves of books. A raised alcove displays a detailed model of the world that tracks celestial movement. The mezzanine, reached by a wrought-iron spiral staircase, houses more books, delicate objects, and Feyre’s artwork. The study also overlooks the river.
Relevance
After the attack on Velaris left many riverfront homes destroyed, Rhysand purchased land along the Sidra as a Solstice gift so Feyre could design a new residence for their family and the Inner Circle. She planned and built the River House by the end of A Court of Frost and Starlight.
In A Court of Silver Flames, the River House functions as the primary home of Feyre and Rhysand. Elain lives there as well, and the layout provides space for the entire Inner Circle—and Lucien—to visit or stay when needed. It is also the site of Nesta’s intervention at the beginning of the book.
