Location
The House of Wind is built into the middle and largest peak of the red, flat-topped mountains that rise along the northern edge of Velaris in the Night Court. It is carved directly into the mountain face, overlooking the city below.
Description
The House of Wind is carved directly into the upper section of the red, flat-topped mountain overlooking Velaris, with windows and openings cut into the rock so that the summit glows like gold at night. Broad balconies lined with golden lanterns jut from the structure, while the interior halls share the same deep crimson hue as the mountain itself. The residence contains numerous bedrooms, a common library, a war room with a black table and mirror, and multiple living spaces.
The House can only be reached by flying, winnowing onto a balcony, or climbing the ten thousand stairs rising from Velaris. It is heavily warded, preventing anyone—including High Lords—from winnowing inside. The manor maintains an account with Velaris shops, allowing members of the Inner Circle to charge purchases to the House.
A casual dining room carved into the rock sits beyond the main entry balcony, centered around a long table built to accommodate wings. Above, an open-air training ring occupies the rooftop and is used for daily drills, flying practice, and combat training.
Bedrooms—including private rooms for Nesta, Elain, Cassian, and Azriel—are located on the lower levels of the House. These chambers vary in size and decor but generally feature stone walls, large beds, fireplaces, and mountain views. The kitchen sits several levels below the dining room.
A small private library is found on the same level as Nesta’s and Elain’s rooms, while a vast underground library extends beneath the mountain, inhabited and tended by priestesses. A central black pit marks the place where Bryaxis once dwelled.
Relevance
Rhysand lived in the House of Wind as a boy, using its height to sneak out and fly over Velaris at night. When Amarantha seized the powers of the High Lords, he used the last of his strength to hide Velaris—along with the House—from her forces, erasing it from the memories of the Court of Nightmares and binding its wards to his Inner Circle.
A Court of Mist and Fury
The House of Wind becomes the place where Feyre meets Rhysand’s Inner Circle for the first time after leaving the Spring Court. Feyre lives here once she joins the Night Court, trains with Cassian in the rooftop ring, and regularly spends time with Rhys, Mor, Azriel, Cassian, and Amren.
A Court of Wings and Ruin
After Nesta and Elain Archeron are Made into High Fae, they are brought to the House of Wind and remain there while Feyre acts as a spy in the Spring Court. The training ring is used by Feyre when Azriel teaches her to fly with her shape-shifted wings.
A Court of Silver Flames
Nesta moves into the House with Cassian and Azriel as part of her training. During her time there, she forms a bond with the House itself, attempts the ten thousand stairs as part of her healing, and trains daily in the rooftop ring. The Valkyries later use the ring for their own training under Cassian and Azriel. Rhysand eventually gifts the House of Wind to Nesta and Cassian as their mating present while retaining its use for official matters.
