Location
Windhaven is an Illyrian war-camp situated in the Illyrian Mountains of the Night Court. It lies high in the rugged northern range where the mountains form steep valleys, isolated plateaus, and cold, wind-swept terrain typical of Illyrian territory. As one of the primary camps in the region, it serves as a central settlement within the mountain strongholds of the Illyrian clans.
Description
Windhaven is a cold, unforgiving Illyrian war-camp built high in the forested mountains of the Night Court. The camp is constructed from bare rock and packed mud, with crude, easily dismantled tents arranged around large fire pits. Near the tree line stand several permanent structures made from gray mountain stone. On the opposite side of the camp are the sparring and training rings. These are equipped with weapons, weights, and other combat supplies. The entire settlement carries a stark, joyless atmosphere suited to its purpose as a military training ground.
Relevance
Windhaven is central to Illyrian training and military life. Rhysand was brought to the camp as a child by his mother to train under Devlon, where he met Cassian and Azriel, forming a lifelong bond between the three. Throughout A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin, Rhysand and the Inner Circle return to Windhaven to oversee preparations for the coming war against Hybern, inspect training, and ensure the warriors are battle-ready. The camp’s fighters later take part in the final battle, where many Illyrians die under the Cauldron’s power.
After the war, Rhysand and Cassian decree that any Illyrian woman who wishes to train must be allowed to do so at Windhaven, creating conflict with the camp’s traditionalist leadership. In A Court of Frost and Starlight, Rhysand and Cassian visit again to address unrest caused by Illyrians speaking against their rule. During A Court of Silver Flames, Cassian brings Nesta to train at Windhaven, where tensions rise due to Illyrian resistance to her presence. Nesta often avoids training by visiting Emerie’s shop nearby, and the camp is shown transitioning into more of a village with several permanent homes.
Notable Locations
| Rhysand’s Mother’s House | Rhysand’s mother maintained a small house in Windhaven, used during the periods when she brought her son to the camp for Illyrian training. The house served as Rhys’s lodging throughout his childhood stays and was one of the few private, permanent structures within the camp. It stands near the tree line among the other stone buildings, offering basic shelter during his years of brutal instruction under Devlon. |
|---|---|
| Emerie’s Shop | Emerie runs a small supply shop in Windhaven, located near the center of the camp’s village area. The shop sells essentials such as weapons, leathers, travel gear, and other items used by Illyrian warriors. Nesta first visits the shop during A Court of Silver Flames, where she meets Emerie and begins forming a friendship that later becomes a core dynamic of the Valkyries. |
