Location
Thrudheim is the stronghold of the Vallahan royal family in Vallahan, a kingdom on the continent. The fortress stands where two mountains meet, overlooking a village, a river and farmland in the valley below.
In Chapter 3 of A Court of Splintered Harmony, Azriel watches the fortress from a concealed position high on one of the mountains. He follows the royal family’s return from the negotiations on Storr and listens to their conversation before they enter the keep.
Description
Thrudheim occupies commanding high ground between two nearly impassable mountains. Below the fortress, a village spreads down the slopes toward the river and the surrounding fields. Snow is already falling during Azriel’s visit, even though the Night Court is still experiencing autumn. Both the river and the fortress moat are frozen.
The fortress is known as golden, but its appearance falls short of that description. Its pale building stone was transported from thousands of miles away, and only occasional, peeling remnants of gold leaf remain on its carved façade.
A formal landing area is reserved exclusively for the royal household. It is circular and made of stone, with carved arches depicting rearing rams. From there, a drawbridge crosses the moat to the fortress gates. Each gate bears a carved ram; the two animals appear to butt heads when the doors close. A courtyard lies beyond the entrance.
Magical wards prevent anyone from winnowing directly inside Thrudheim. Azriel also cannot use his shadows to overhear the royal family once they have crossed the threshold and wards. He therefore observes them outside the gates, where his shadows can listen from beneath the bridge.
The mountains and elevated position provide strong defences against armies approaching by land. Azriel, however, regards the same setting as easy to observe from the air. Snow conceals his position but also reduces his own visibility.
Relevance
Seat of the Vallahan Royal Family
The King, Queen and Prince of Vallahan return to Thrudheim immediately after the meeting on Storr. Their exchange outside the gates reveals disagreements within the family: the king defends his respect for Morrigan, while the queen and prince dismiss her influence.
Azriel recalls that the king and queen entered an arranged marriage. The queen’s father was a powerful warlord whose forces had been needed to reinforce Vallahan’s military during unrest linked to the failing farmland. Their son is roughly ninety years old and has not yet married or found a mate, leaving open the possibility of a political marriage alliance.
Azriel’s Surveillance
Azriel chooses Vallahan as a place to gather information after the Storr negotiations. Rask is difficult to infiltrate, while Montesere’s extensive spy network makes operating there dangerous. At Thrudheim, he conceals himself in a rocky recess on one of the mountains and sends his shadows to listen beneath the bridge.
He does not enter the fortress. Instead, he uses the brief interval between the royal family’s arrival and their passage through the gates to learn more about their plans. Before leaving, he also hears a guard disparage the prince without being challenged by the other soldiers. Azriel identifies this lack of loyalty as a possible weakness in the ruling family’s position.
The Search for a Made Weapon
Outside Thrudheim, the prince refers to a planned departure the following day to continue the search for a Made weapon. His remarks confirm that he has already participated in the mountain search alongside people from Montesere and Rask.
The queen instructs her son to obtain the weapon for Vallahan specifically. Although the three kingdoms are cooperating, her demand suggests that their interests are not fully aligned. Azriel considers using the competition for the weapon to undermine their alliance.
He also plans to watch the prince’s departure and monitor visitors to Thrudheim, particularly any emissaries from Montesere or Rask. These are plans formed during his surveillance; the scene does not establish that he follows the prince or discovers the weapon.
Vallahan’s Decline
The valley below Thrudheim reflects Vallahan’s wider difficulties. Its fields have not produced abundant harvests for a long time, and the soil has lost its fertility despite the efforts of the kingdom’s shamans to restore it.
Although the Autumn Equinox is only days away, Azriel sees no harvest decorations. To him, their absence reflects a land with little bounty to celebrate. The failing fields also provide context for Vallahan’s unrest and its rulers’ interest in reclaiming human lands.
