Amren – Important Questions (Quick Answers)
If you’re here, you’re probably wondering who—or what—Amren truly is, where her terrifying power comes from, and what role she plays in the Night Court. Here are clear, spoiler-aware answers grounded in canon.
Who is Amren?
Amren is a member of Rhysand’s Inner Circle in A Court of Thorns and Roses, feared and respected for her immense power and ancient knowledge. Though she appears as High Fae, Amren is not truly fae at all—she is an otherworldly being who became trapped in a mortal body long before the events of the series.
What is Amren, exactly?
Amren originates from another world entirely and once existed as a powerful, near-divine entity. After crossing into Prythian and becoming bound to a physical form, she lost much of her original freedom—but retained fragments of devastating power, vast intelligence, and an unshakable presence that sets her apart from every other character.
What are Amren’s powers?
Amren wields ancient, destructive magic tied to her true form—power so dangerous it’s treated as a last resort. Her abilities include immense raw force, enhanced perception, and deep knowledge of spells, languages, and forgotten lore. When unleashed, Amren’s power rivals that of gods rather than High Fae.
What is Amren’s role in the Night Court?
Amren serves as the Night Court’s living weapon and arcane authority. Rhysand relies on her for ancient knowledge, magical strategy, and threats too dangerous for conventional solutions. While she answers to no one lightly, Amren chooses loyalty to the Inner Circle—and protects Velaris with ruthless precision.
Is Amren in a relationship?
Yes. Amren is in a committed relationship with Varian, the prince of Adriata. Their bond is marked by mutual respect, sharp banter, and a balance between Amren’s lethal nature and Varian’s steadier presence.
Biography / History
True Form and Origins
Amren is an ancient and extraordinarily powerful being of unknown origin, once imprisoned in the Prison for millennia. She escaped only by relinquishing her “grace and perfect immortality” and binding her soul into a High Fae body, effectively becoming Made.
She is older than Prythian itself and is believed to have slipped into the world from another realm during its formation, becoming trapped when the rift closed. She has described herself as a “messenger and soldier-assassin for a wrathful god who ruled a young world.”
In A Court of Wings and Ruin, Amren reveals that she has a father in her original realm—a being so powerful that she wonders whether he intentionally opened the rift that brought her into Prythian as a gift to her.
Before the War with Hybern, Amren required blood to survive, but after being re-Made by the Cauldron during her sacrifice, she no longer needs blood and now eats normal food.

Gives Feyre a “Protective” Necklace for the Prison

Visit to the Summer Court
During the diplomatic visit to the Summer Court, Amren accompanies Feyre as they infiltrate Tarquin’s palace to steal the Summer Court’s half of the Book of Breathings. This mission marks the first time Amren meets Prince Varian—who watches her warily, yet with unmistakable fascination, beginning the charged dynamic that continues later in the series.
A Court of Wings and Ruin — Timeline Events

Continues Translating the Book of Breathings
When Feyre returns to Velaris, the Inner Circle meets in Amren’s apartment. Amren continues working on translating the Book of Breathings. When she suggests using Feyre’s sisters to approach the Cauldron and Feyre refuses, Amren tells her to stop acting like Tamlin— provoking Mor’s anger, which Amren finds amusing.

Trains Nesta in Magic
As Nesta refuses to train physically, she agrees to work with Amren instead. The two spend days testing Nesta’s Cauldron-given power and searching for ways to repair the cracks in the wall.

Arrives at the War Camp After the Winter Court Battle
After the bloody Winter Court battle, Amren arrives at the Night Court’s camp and overhears Feyre and Mor arguing. She warns Feyre not to push Mor too far. Varian finds Amren in the camp. The two share a passionate reunion, spending the night together—finally acknowledging the tension first sparked in the Summer Court.

Unleashes Her True Form to End Hybern
Amren reveals that the Suriel’s “spell” was never meant to nullify the Cauldron but to unbind her true form. After telling Varian a final goodbye and admitting she now understands love because of him, she leaps into the Cauldron. Reborn as a being of fire and living light, Amren unleashes her full power and obliterates Hybern’s remaining armies, burning herself away in the process.

Reborn as High Fae
After the Cauldron shatters, its leaking power threatens the world. Feyre and Rhys repair it at great cost—Rhys dies and is brought back by the High Lords. When the Cauldron stabilizes, Rhys says Amren was still “within.” He reached out a hand, and she chose to return. Azriel, Mor, and Varian pull her from the Cauldron—now reborn fully as High Fae, her former power mostly gone.
A Court of Silver Flames — Timeline Events

Cold Toward Nesta After Their Falling-Out
After the events of ACOWAR, Amren and Nesta’s relationship is deeply strained. When Nesta is forced to move into the House of Wind, Amren greets her with open hostility and sharp criticism, clearly still angry about past conflicts.

Working Closely With the Inner Circle
Amren continues acting as Rhysand’s political adviser and Second. She participates in discussions about the Dread Trove, the Cauldron’s lingering power, and the dangers Nesta’s power presents.

Pushes Nesta to Scry for the Trove
Because Nesta carries Cauldron power, Amren insists she is the only one who can scry for the Dread Trove. She supervises multiple attempts, including those with the magical bones.
Appearance
Amren is described as small, several inches shorter than Feyre. She is thin, with:
- Smooth, tan skin
- Chin-length, silky, straight black hair
- A pretty face bordering on plain
- Angular silver eyes that swirl like smoke under glass
- Slim, delicate fingers
- A voice that can be soft but is sharper than any blade
Changes Through the Series
- After Being Re-Made by the Cauldron (A Court of Wings and Ruin):
Once Amren is truly remade into a High Fae body after her sacrifice, her eyes lose their smoky, otherworldly swirl and become a normal silver color. Her physical form otherwise remains small, sharp, and deceptively delicate in appearance.
Personality
Amren is sharp, ancient, and unapologetically self-possessed—defined by cunning, vanity, and a volatile temper, yet capable of surprising loyalty and sacrifice.
Key traits
- Vain and territorial:
Amren is openly vain and fiercely protective of her possessions, “hoarding her baubles like a firedrake in a cave.” She does not tolerate others touching what she considers hers. - Cunning and highly intelligent:
Her mind is one of her greatest weapons. Amren is perceptive, quick-thinking, and fascinated by complex puzzles—both political and literal—eventually developing a fondness for jigsaw puzzles. - Temperamental:
She has an infamous, explosive temper when provoked. Even the Inner Circle treats her moods with caution. - Secretly caring:
Despite her sharp edges, Amren occasionally shows gentleness. She gives Feyre a necklace for courage before her journey to the Prison, revealing a quiet, protective side beneath her abrasive exterior. - Selfless when it matters:
Amren ultimately sacrifices herself to save Prythian during the war against Hybern, demonstrating that her loyalty—once earned—is profound and unwavering.
She is fiercely protective of her hoarded treasures and threatens deadly consequences toward anyone who attempts to steal them.
Powers & Abilities
Ancient Being in a Made High Fae Body
Amren is an immortal creature bound into a High Fae body after surrendering her “grace and perfect immortality” to escape the Prison. She has lived for millennia and is believed to be older than Prythian itself.
She possesses:
- Immortality
- Vast, ancient power far beyond typical High Fae
- Illusion manipulation, capable of projecting visions, nightmares, and sensory experiences
- Lethal illusions, which can kill if the victim believes them to be real
- Limited healing, demonstrated when she mends Cassian’s wings
- Destruction of protective wards, such as during the retrieval of the Book of Breathings in Adriata
- Levitation, allowing her to lift and move objects
- A true form of fire and light, able to incinerate anything nearby—though using this fully burns her out
Loss of Power After the Cauldron
Following her sacrifice during the War with Hybern and her subsequent re-Making by the Cauldron, Amren loses the majority of her ancient powers. She no longer possesses the destructive abilities of her true form and survives instead as a typical High Fae—without the need for blood and without her former godlike strength.
Abilities
- Multilingualism:
Amren speaks the common tongue of Prythian and Leshon Hakodesh, the “Holy Tongue.” The exact number of languages she knows is unknown. - Leadership:
As Second-in-Command of the Night Court, Amren holds high authority and strategic responsibility. She protects Velaris during the battle with Hybern when Rhysand and Feyre are absent.
Relationships
| Rhysand | Amren and Rhysand share a close and longstanding relationship. Rhys holds her in exceptionally high regard and often brings her jewelry from the Velaris Palaces. He once admits to Feyre that he was foolish enough to invite Amren to his bed centuries ago—an offer she declined while laughing herself hoarse. Though Rhys is the most powerful High Lord in Prythian’s history, he notes that interrupting Amren is something he has dared to do only once in a hundred years. When Rhys asked her to become his Second-in-Command, it was the first time anyone had ever offered her such a position, and she accepted out of curiosity. She has since found that she enjoys the role. As his Second, Amren serves as his political adviser, his vast repository of knowledge, and the one who handles tasks others cannot—or will not—do. |

| Varian | After meeting in the Summer Court, Amren and Varian form a complicated connection. Varian is torn between fear of her power and fascination with her, while Amren is tempted by the idea of a relationship but initially chooses not to pursue it.Following the Summer Court’s threat of blood rubies, Varian sends her a ruby necklace that immediately calms her anger and stops her from destroying Adriata. The necklace later appears on her nightstand, as though she keeps it close while she sleeps. In A Court of Wings and Ruin, Varian warns Amren that Adriata is under attack, prompting her to urge Rhysand to send aid. After the battle in the Winter Court, Varian finds her at the Night Court’s war camp, kisses her, and brings her to her tent, where they spend the night together. When Amren chooses to unbind her true form, Varian is devastated and begs her not to. Before Feyre unbinds her, Amren indirectly admits she might love him. Varian is visibly relieved when she emerges from the Cauldron afterward, and they begin a true relationship. In A Court of Frost and Starlight, Amren invites Varian to the Winter Solstice celebration. He brings her a multitude of gifts from the Summer Court and continues buying her more while in Velaris. |
| Nesta | Amren meets Nesta Archeron in A Court of Wings and Ruin, and the two form an immediate connection. Amren recognizes in Nesta a reflection of herself—another being forced into a High Fae body, carrying immense power and deep, simmering anger. Nesta’s refusal to fear or bow to Amren earns her respect, and Amren offers to train her. Their shared rage and intensity lead to a genuine, if sharp-edged, friendship. Amren openly acknowledges their similarity, telling her, “We are the same, you and I.”In A Court of Silver Flames, their relationship deteriorates. Amren loses patience with Nesta’s destructive behavior and intervenes harshly during multiple conflicts, which Nesta experiences as betrayal. Their bond fractures, and the two become openly hostile toward each other for much of the book. After Nesta begins to heal—emotionally and magically—their relationship slowly mends. By the end of the novel, they regain a mutual respect and return to a steadier, more understanding friendship. |
