Location
The Bog of Oorid lies within the Middle, the stretch of dangerous, unmapped territory that divides the Solar Courts in the north from the Seasonal Courts in the south. The bog has never been properly charted, and its waterways are believed to flow toward Under the Mountain. Creatures inhabiting the area use these water routes to move through the Middle and, at times, into the surrounding courts.
Description
The Bog of Oorid has only dim, grey light instead of true sunlight. The air is heavy, damp, and still, carrying the scents of mold and wet earth. With no wind to move it, the air mutes sound and absorbs screams so they do not echo. Cold mist drifts above the water and obscures visibility.
The bog’s water is black and frigid, flat like an obsidian mirror. Dead trees rise from the swamp, their trunks grey with age and their broken branches draped in moss. Small islands of grass and dead trees dot the area, some too tangled with brambles to approach. Beneath the surface, the ground is thick with mud and silt, along with weapons and armored bodies from old burials. No animals live in the Bog of Oorid. There are no insects or birds to break the silence.
Relevance
The Bog of Oorid was once a sacred site where warriors were laid to rest in its waters. At some unknown point, its nature changed, and it became a place associated with darkness and corruption. The area grew so dangerous that no one willingly entered it, and only the most malevolent faeries were drawn to its depths. The Mask from the Dread Trove was eventually hidden beneath its waters.
In A Court of Silver Flames, Nesta scryed for the Mask and located it in the Bog of Oorid. She traveled there with Cassian and Azriel to retrieve it. During their search, Cassian and Azriel were attacked by Autumn Court soldiers, and Nesta was dragged underwater by a kelpie. While submerged, she sensed and claimed the Mask. Using its power, she reanimated the long-dead warriors resting in the bog, and they killed the kelpie, allowing her to escape.
