Biography / History

Early Life

Alis was born in the Summer Court, where she lived with her sister, her sister’s mate, and their two young sons. Fifty years before the events of the series, Amarantha arrived in Prythian and the Summer Court rebelled against her. In retaliation, Amarantha killed Alis’s sister and her mate, forcing Alis to send her nephews into hiding for their safety.

After losing her family, Alis sought refuge in the Spring Court. High Lord Tamlin took her in and gave her work as a maid in his manor. Soon after her arrival, Amarantha hosted a masquerade Under the Mountain as a supposed “peace offering” after maiming Lucien. The entire Spring Court—including Alis, masked as a bird—was required to attend.

During the feast, Tamlin refused Amarantha’s advances, and she cursed the entire Spring Court. She bound their masks to their faces and gave Tamlin forty-nine years to break the curse: he had to make a human woman kill for him with hate in her heart and then fall in love with him—and if she confessed her love before time ran out, the curse would be shattered.

A Court of Thorns and Roses

When Tamlin brings Feyre to the Spring Court after killing Andras, Alis is assigned to look after her. She bathes, dresses, and prepares Feyre each day, escorting her to dine with Tamlin and Lucien.

After Rhysand exposes Feyre’s presence and the Spring Court is taken Under the Mountain, Alis escapes with the intent to find her nephews. When Feyre returns to the manor, Alis tells her the true story of Amarantha’s curse and how Feyre could have broken it. Though she warns Feyre not to go Under the Mountain—reminding her she is only human—Alis ultimately accompanies her to the entrance tunnel.

A Court of Mist and Fury

With Amarantha defeated, Alis resumes her duties at the Spring Court and tends to Feyre, insisting it is repayment for breaking the curse. She witnesses Feyre’s worsening physical and emotional decline. When Morrigan arrives to rescue Feyre, Alis silently supports the escape. She asks Mor to take care of Feyre and keeps the truth hidden from Tamlin.

A Court of Wings and Ruin

Back in the Spring Court under Feyre’s ruse, Alis assists her with daily tasks but quickly sees through the act. She confesses she witnessed Mor taking Feyre from the manor—and that her cousin in Adriata saw Feyre happy and healthy in the Summer Court. She warns Feyre not to involve her nephews in whatever she is planning.

Before Feyre departs for the Wall, Alis reveals she is relocating to the Summer Court with her nephews. Feyre warns her never to speak of their friendship to Tarquin because of the blood ruby on her name. Alis insists Feyre will always have a friend in the Summer Court, and Feyre promises the same of the Night Court in return.

Appearance

Alis, a urisk and member of a faerie subspecies, is described as taller than the average human with subtly pointed ears similar to the High Fae. When Feyre first encounters her, she appears to be a plump, brown-haired faerie woman. However, once Tamlin allows Feyre to see through faerie glamour, Feyre realizes that Alis’s true form includes skin textured like tree bark, marking her clearly as a urisk rather than a typical High Fae.

Personality

Alis initially comes across as cold and distant, especially toward Feyre after Andras’s death. Over time, however, she reveals a warmer, more maternal nature. She explains that Andras knew the risks of crossing the Wall, and as she grows closer to Feyre, she begins treating her with gentle, motherly affection.

Relationships

Key relationships of Alis
FeyreAlis is consistently protective and caring toward Feyre, though she begins with some understandable suspicion. When Feyre first arrives at the Spring Court, Alis advises her to “keep her mouth shut and her ears open,” to stay alert, and even warns her that Lucien might need someone willing to stand up to him. Despite her initial caution, Alis quickly becomes one of Feyre’s strongest allies. She helps Feyre escape the Spring Court when Tamlin locks her in and refuses to accept Feyre’s lies about the Night Court. In the end, Feyre returns the kindness by ensuring Alis and her nephews can flee the Spring Court safely to the Summer Court.
TamlinAlis serves in Tamlin’s manor throughout A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury. At the start of A Court of Wings and Ruin, she and her nephews return to the Summer Court to keep them safe from the looming war with Hybern.
