James is no longer the little boy we remember. Rosabelle arrives with a mission she can’t afford to fail. And Aaron, Juliette and their friends are discovering that defeating The Reestablishment didn’t mean they were finished with it.
Shatter Me: The New Republic brings familiar characters into a new story centered on James Anderson and Rosabelle Wolff. Their relationship begins on opposite sides of the conflict, with James entering Ark Island and Rosabelle tasked with killing him.
Here’s who’s who, how they’re connected, and why each character matters.

Spoiler warning: This guide includes revelations from Watch Me and Escape Me, as well as the original Shatter Me series.

James Anderson
James Anderson is the younger brother of Adam Kent and the younger half-brother of Aaron Warner Anderson. Readers of the original series knew him as James Kent; in The New Republic, he’s twenty-one and determined to be taken seriously.
He has a healing ability that allows him to recover from extraordinary injuries and heal others. That power makes him formidable, but it doesn’t make every decision he takes a safe one. His mission to the Ark brings Rosabelle into his life, and he becomes convinced that there is more to her than the assassin everyone else sees.
What we enjoy about James is the tension between his humor and his determination. He can be playful, affectionate and infuriatingly stubborn—especially when the people he loves dismiss his judgment.
In Escape Me, saving Rosabelle pushes his healing into uncertain territory. His feelings for her are clear; what his power may have done to the technology inside her remains unresolved.

Rosabelle Wolff
Rosabelle Wolff, also called Rosa, is a twenty-year-old assassin from Ark Island. She has learned to survive by controlling what she says, what she reveals and how much of herself anyone gets to see. Her younger sister Clara depends on her, making every assignment more than a question of her own survival.
Rosabelle can deliberately shut down her body, entering a state that resembles death. This ability, described as voluntary suspended animation, makes her exceptionally difficult to monitor and interrogate. It also helps explain why even Aaron struggles to read her. Her assassin training is separate from this ability.
She has extremely pale skin and blond hair so light it is almost white. Her resemblance to Clara is striking, although their personalities are very different: Clara remains openly tender and hopeful, while Rosabelle has learned to bury those parts of herself.
James makes that emotional distance increasingly difficult to maintain. Caring for him gives her something else to lose, even as protecting Clara keeps pulling her back toward the Ark.
Her past also includes experiments involving technology in her right arm. At the end of Escape Me, an internal interface becomes active and blue circuitry appears beneath her skin. The installation is confirmed; its capabilities and the extent of Klaus’s access are not.

Aaron Warner Anderson
Aaron Warner Anderson is James’s older half-brother, Juliette’s husband and the leader of the New Republic. His responsibilities make Rosabelle’s arrival a security problem as well as a family conflict: James wants to trust her, while Aaron has an entire population to protect.
Aaron can sense other people’s emotions and channel their abilities by absorbing their energy. His emotional awareness gives him an advantage when questioning people, but it isn’t mind-reading: he can sense what someone feels without knowing every thought behind it. Rosabelle’s ability to shut herself down makes her particularly difficult for him to read.
That difference puts pressure on their relationship. James wants his brother to recognize his judgment, and Aaron struggles to give him room when the consequences could be catastrophic.
Some of our favorite moments come when that guarded relationship softens. By the end of Escape Me, Aaron acknowledges that excluding James was a mistake and begins giving him greater responsibility. Alongside those changes, he and Juliette welcome their daughter, Emmaline.

Juliette Ferrars
Juliette Ferrars, whose birth name is Ella Sommers, is Aaron’s wife and James’s sister-in-law. Her history connects the new series to the revolution that changed their world.
Juliette has a lethal touch and extraordinary physical strength. Her power can inflict intense pain or kill, while her strength allows her to break through barriers an ordinary person could never damage. Learning to control those abilities was central to her story in the original series.
In Escape Me, pregnancy complicates her control over her powers, adding another source of concern for the family while the New Republic faces attacks. She later gives birth to a daughter named Emmaline, after her sister.
Juliette’s relationship with James brings a gentler side to the story. Around her, we see him as a brother-in-law who cares deeply about his family, beyond the missions and arguments over his place in the New Republic.

Kenji Kishimoto
Kenji Kishimoto is a familiar face from the original series and a close friend of James. His ability to turn invisible remains valuable to the resistance, but his role also involves making difficult decisions about security and trust.
He may joke with James, but that doesn’t mean he shares James’s confidence in Rosabelle. Their friendship has to accommodate the fact that they see her differently.
His relationship with Nazeera also continues into the new series. Their unresolved feelings give the returning cast a personal storyline alongside the larger conflict.

Nazeera Ibrahim
Nazeera Ibrahim is the daughter of Ibrahim, a former Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment, and the sister of Haider. She grew up close to the regime’s powerful families but chose to oppose the system that protected them.
She has two abilities: flight and invisibility. Nazeera originally concealed her powers because she feared becoming another subject of the regime’s experiments. Her ability to move unseen also gives her something in common with Kenji—although sharing his signature power certainly catches his attention.
Her headscarf is another deliberate choice. Under The Reestablishment, where head coverings were prohibited, wearing it was an act of defiance.
In The New Republic, Nazeera becomes closely involved in Rosabelle’s situation, with Rosa staying in her house during Escape Me. Her complicated relationship with Kenji also continues: their history, separation and unresolved feelings give her a personal stake in the story beyond the conflict with the Ark.

Adam Kent
Adam Kent Anderson is James’s older brother and Aaron Warner’s half-brother. He is married to Alia, and they have two children, Gigi and Roman. Together, he and Alia run a design firm, while Adam helps organize fundraisers at the children’s elementary school. He has deliberately stepped away from the family’s military and political affairs: he refuses to own a gun and rarely talks about his past. Adam’s ability allows him to neutralize other people’s powers, but his life now revolves around his wife, their children, and the peaceful future he has built.

Winston
Winston is a familiar face from Omega Point and remains close to Kenji and James in The New Republic. His ability allows him to stretch and bend his body far beyond normal human limits.

Sebastian Rivers
Sebastian Rivers is Rosabelle’s fiancé and a lieutenant associated with The Reestablishment on Ark Island. Their parents arranged the betrothal when they were children, long before their families’ positions changed.
His father, Alastair Lucas Rivers, is the new Supreme Commander of The Reestablishment. Previously CCR of Sector 47, Alastair comes from an old, influential family. While Rosabelle’s family was punished for treason, Sebastian’s father rose through the reorganized regime.
Sebastian used his family’s influence to secure the council’s approval to honor the betrothal despite Rosabelle’s sanctions. That makes the engagement politically significant as well as deeply personal.
Rosabelle describes him as classically handsome, with dark hair, even darker eyes and fair skin with a rosy, almost boyish appearance. That appearance offers little reassurance given his treatment of her and his involvement in Clara’s placement in the Asylum.
For Rosabelle, his position may provide a way back into the Ark. It also places her close to a family with enormous power over her future.

Clara Wolff
Clara is Rosabelle’s thirteen-year-old sister, seven years younger than Rosa. She is seriously ill and depends on her older sister for care. Her illness causes her to collapse, bleed from her lips and fall into periods of coma. The exact diagnosis is not specified.
She resembles Rosabelle, with exceptionally pale skin and nearly white blond hair. Her temperament is softer. Despite her circumstances, she remains tender and optimistic.
In Watch Me, Sebastian has Clara taken to the Asylum—the place Rosabelle fears she cannot survive without her care.
Clara is central to understanding Rosa. Protecting her sister shapes the risks she accepts, the information she conceals and her determination to return to the Ark. Even as James becomes important to her, Clara’s survival remains a responsibility she cannot set aside.
