Biography / History
Kelpies were among the earliest true monsters of the faerie realm—creatures said to have been Made by a cruel god and scattered across rivers, lakes, and dark waters throughout the world. In ancient times, both Fae and humans believed kelpies to be river or lake deities, offering live sacrifices to appease them. Some accounts suggest these sacrifices were not acts of reverence but desperate measures to prevent kelpies from emerging to hunt villages, steal children, or drag unsuspecting travelers beneath the surface. When fed, the creatures remained in their depths; when denied, they hunted freely.
Over the centuries, kelpies were hunted relentlessly in an effort to wipe out the threat. By the last five hundred years, they had vanished entirely, becoming little more than cautionary tales whispered around fires—warnings meant to keep children away from riverbanks and marshes. Their extinction was widely presumed, though legends persisted that at least one kelpie escaped to the Middle, where primal magic offered sanctuary from hunters and the Fae alike.
A Court of Silver Flames
Nesta Archeron’s journey into the Middle reveals that the kelpies were not extinct after all. She encounters one in the dark waters of the Middle—a creature that embodies every terrifying myth ever told. The kelpie attempts to drown her and drag her into its realm, using its natural ability to manipulate water and ensnare minds with terror.
Nesta ultimately overpowers and slays the kelpie, ripping free a magical mask it had guarded. The encounter confirms that at least some kelpies survived their supposed extinction, lurking in hidden, ancient waters beyond the reach of ordinary Fae.
Appearance
The kelpie Nesta encounters in the Bog of Oorid possesses a grotesque, humanoid form, though it moves on all fours when on land. Its skin is paler than bone, stretched over a thin, angular frame that belies immense strength. Its arms end in extraordinarily long fingers, each as long as Nesta’s forearm, four-jointed and tipped with dagger-sharp nails.
The creature’s eyes are enormous and entirely black, lacking any visible whites, set above sharp cheekbones and a narrow nose. Its hair is long, obsidian-dark, and matted with bog weeds. The kelpie’s mouth is unnaturally wide, filled with twin rows of jagged, rotted teeth, and its tongue is long, black, and worm-like. Its breath reeks of decaying meat.
When the kelpie speaks, its voice is a deep, hoarse grind—like stone scraping over stone. The language it uses is an ancient faerie dialect not spoken in fifteen thousand years, suggesting the creature itself is at least that old.
